So ever since new, my KK ticks at idle. You can hear it coming from underneath between the exhausts where they leave the engine and split. The ticks are RPM sensitive and at idle there are about 2-3 per second. My mechanic has no idea what could be causing this; we both decided its a jeep, it makes strange noises, se la vive.

But I hear it whenever I'm at the dunkin drive thru getting coffee because the sounds from below reflect back up at me off the wall/curb. And it ticks me off.

Any theories?

Mine def does it at initial start up when cold. It stops as it starts to warm up after a minute or so. This is a common complaint of the 3.7.

Mine ticks above 2500-3000 RPM, especially under light engine load (like when accelerating uphill in low gear or coasting down a steep hill at 65 mph). Before I bought it I asked my trusted mechanic about this, and after checking all sorts of things (including making sure the oil pump worked fine), he just concluded that some engines are noisier than others. That was 12,000 miles ago, and I'm now at 36,000 on the odometer, several oil changes down the road. No difference in the noise behavior and no problems so far, just a bit louder than the average 3.7. Sorry, I don't have specific ideas about the source of the noise or how to fix it! My previous XJ's 4.0L inline 6 made a ticking sound too, but it was also fine. Maybe a Jeep thing?

I'm only concerned that there may be some metal on metal contact somewhere toward the bottom of the engine (where the sound emanates from).

You could save a sample of your engine oil the next time you do an oil change, and then send it out to get it analyzed. They could tell you if you have above normal concentrations of metal in your engine oil, indicating premature wear. Because different engine parts are made of different alloys, they could probably even help you narrow it down if there's a problem. This company: http://www.blackstone-labs.com/ saved my 4.0 engine in my Jeep Cherokee XJ because they identified a cracked head that was allowing coolant to slowly mix with my oil. I couldn't figure out on my own where my coolant was going, and it turned out to be an internal leak. If they hadn't identified the problem, I would have destroyed my engine bearings and need a new engine. As it was, I got a new cylinder head. Expensive, but not as much as if I had waited. Hopefully you have no real problems with your 3.7, but the test results might give you peace of mind. It's pretty inexpensive to do the test.

The thing to understand about oil analysis is you need to have multiple same samples over a period of time to build a history of wear metals. A sample at this point would only be a base line to start with.

Good point, Digger. Coolant is never supposed to be in the oil, so that was easy to find with one sample. But metals will always be there to some degree. The trick is finding out what levels would be normal for your engine, and if the metal concentrations go up all of a sudden, then that might indicate a problem.

Why not call a dealer and set up a time to have them listen to it....

A listen might be free....

Ticking could be nothing or the start of something..

Yeah. My mechanics obviously don't work on a ton of KKs, no idea what is normal sounding. Hence, they were left scratching their heads.

I'll make an appointment with the stealership, and see to it that they lift it up and stand underneath while it runs. The sound comes from the exhaust right where it connects to the bottom of the engine. Shouldn't be that hard to diagnose.

Will advise once I have new info

Two mechanics at the stealership says it's a normal noise. They'd have no reason to lie, because it's under warranty . . . they would bill Jeep for the cost of fixing it. So, I guess it's just a Jeep thing, again. :roll:

Man, these things are rough around the edges. :lol:

Mines been ticking like that since day one. Now I have over 103k miles. I think it's just a jeep thing. No problems, it's just annoying.

Well it's not that far back on mine. It's literally right at the bottom of the engine, where the exhaust splits to make room for the trans.

The 3.7L is a Clydesdale, not an Arabian

A leak of what? My spent oil looks fine when it comes out. Levels are perfect.

Honestly, I'm convinced it's just a Jeep thing.

My 1988 Chevy Beretta w/2.8 V6 ticked, 2002 Pontiac Grand Am 3400 V6 ticked, my wife's 2012 KK w/1800 miles ticks and lastly my KJ with 68k miles ticks.

No knock, just a tick. Must be a V thing :D Don't think I've owned a car that didn't tick, ha,.

Providing its the same tictictictictictictic sound that we all hear its perfectly normal for the 3.7 something to do with the material the manifold and surrounding "stuff" is made of and how the sit together or whatnot. I know its not a very reassuring scientific answer but I read it somewhere recently and since the sound on mine hasnt even changed I will assume that what I read is correct.
