... Woops - 12V plug toast

Hey everyone,

Yesterday driving out to the mountains, I had a power converter plugged into my 12V plug on my dash (aka cigarette lighter plug). As we were driving along, ZAP! SPARK! DEAD!

Tried to plug a few things into it, none of them turned on. Therefore I'm guessing that the plug's dead, not my converter (maybe both, but we'll cross that river if we come to it).

I'm just curious if anyone has the information regarding pulling that plug - or where the fuse is, etc. The spark actually flew from the plug itself.

I can't seem to find a pic right now, and I am out of the country and no where near my jeep to take a shot for you or even look myself...

but from what I'm reading M7 is the fuse you are looking for under the hood. on the fuse box lid there should be a description of what everything is. the fuse I'm talking about (and this is on my 2011) that fuse has 2 positions: Always on, and with acc on only (turns off with vehicle is off). Hopefully thats all it is.

With the spark coming right from the plug, you may be right, but it is worth checking the fuse itself. The fuses are located in a black plastic box directly behind your battery. Here is the info from page 436-7 of my 2008 owners manual:

"FUSES (INTEGRATED POWER MODULE)
The Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) is located in the engine compartment near the battery. This center contains cartridge fuses, mini fuses and relays. A label that identifies each component is printed on the inside of the cover.
...
Cavity / Cartridge Fuse / Mini Fuse / Description
M6 / — / 20 Amp Yellow / Power Outlet #1 (cigar lighter)/Rain Sensor - if equipped/ Trailer Tow - if equipped
M7 / — / 20 Amp Yellow / Power Outlet #2 (BATT/ACC SELECT)"

It should be one of these. My money is on M7, because I used it to swap my power outlet setting to be on all the time rather than just when the engine was running. I have a power inverter that I plug in while camping, and I want to be able to use it without turning the key.

...although I would be curious to know as what caused the spark to begin with? next time might not be just the fuse.

I am going to bet on the fuse blowing and the inverter blowing its fuse too. (If not frying itself).

Thanks for the info everyone, I'll be getting on the fuses tonight. Hopefully I did just pop the Jeep, & inverter fuses. That *could* explain the spark... maybe... We'll see soon enough I suppose.

Well the M7 fuse is definitely blown - now I just need to stop someplace to buy a replacement and try that out.

Just remember that depending on how you install the fuse, the outlet may or may not be powered all of the time.
