I recently hit 3000 miles and 3 months since my last oil change, yet I'm not getting the message about needing an oil change yet. I've been doing quite a bit of towing during that time (in Tow/Haul mode), which I would think would trigger it to be heavy use and prompt me to change the oil right at 3000. Apparently that's not the case so I'm wondering if I can wait until it does say I need it, or just take it in and get it changed now. Is it really smart enough to know whether it needs to be changed, or is this just a case of electronics failing me? :)

The only way to know what your oil change interval should be is to get an Oil analysis. I just play it safe and get it changed every 3,000 miles. Its cheap insurance.

FYI, the owners manual says every 6000 to do oil changes.. I do them when the light comes on.. usually at around 4800-5100 miles from the last one.

It says 6,000 for normal use, but if you tow, off road, commute in the city(Stop and Go), or live where temperatures drop freezing in the winter and are high in the summer then you fall under the 3K mile change.

For what it's worth, the owners manual DOES say every 6000 miles for oil changes, period. There is no longer a Schedule A or Schedule B. Just "Required Maintenance Intervals".

I'm sticking to the manual, 6000 miles... but I'm going to use Synthetic.

My reminder comes on between 1900 and 2200. I reset it and change the oil at 4000 to 4500. Mines do Marlon want to come up and help?

Help with an oil change? I don't even do my own oil changes (regularly). I take it to the dealer!
I'm not a wimp... just LAZY.

BTW: Seems like different model years have different maintenance intervals. My '10 says oil needs to be changed every 6,000 miles. Same for my '08 WK. The '11 manual says the oil doesn't need to be changed but every 8000 miles!

Do all the KK Libertys have the oil change dummy light, I just got mine (used 2008) and I'm at 4700 miles (in 2 months) since I got it and the light hasn't come on yet. I have the oil and filter, I just want to make sure that I'm not going WAY over

Yes, the KK will ding at you and display a message where the odometer is right after you start it up.

Step 1. Look at your budget
Step 2. Look at your dip stick every 500 miles and take a picture of the oil on it.
Step 3. When you hit 3K think to your self does it look dark enough to change
Step 3a: repeat step 3 till you change your oil or the motor.
Step 4: Repeat 1 to 3 for life
Step 5: have your oil looked at at 3K miles be a real company who can tell if it is good or bad.

Once you learn how your oil life is with the driving you do, you can come up with a great service time for oil changes...

This is the cleanest oil thread I have ever seen

Any way, as hrogi said, just go with your gut.

My 2011 gave me the message @ 7500. I re wrote the maint sched for Oil and tire rotation every 5000. And I use full synthetic.

No idea why it popped up right @ 7500, the oil was still as golden as could be.

The computer takes a few variables together to recommend you change interval. If you do city driving, it will come on earlier than if you do highway driving. Same if you tow. I would trust your service manual and the light, whichever comes first.

The oil was very clean when I got it so I'm fairly confident that it was changed right before I got the Jeep. Will be putting another 1000 or so this weekend and might go ahead and change it for piece of mind.

Still changing mine every 6k... regardless of what the reminder says. Next change due at 48000 miles... then at 54000... Then 60000.... 66000.... 72000.... you get the point.

FINALLY got the message to change the oil, about 300 miles into a 1000 mile road trip this weekend. Time for an oil change.

Just curious about this. I put full synthetic in my Liberty for the first time. (at 16,000 miles right now). The previous times I have changed my oil, I used regular. I have gone about 3,000 miles on this current oil change and the "change oil" light keeps coming on. This has never happened to me before. It has started to come on now that it is a bit colder. Do I need to change my oil already on full synthetic?

I'd say no. Just check the level and color to be sure.

The cold (0-20f) does play with the sensor on mine. Just reset, ignore and follow the plan
