Kind of a dumb question, but why are Jeep Liberty's built with different air intake systems?

I have this style:

But have seen others who have this style:

Image

What is the point of the second 'box' that is in mine? Resonator? How can I remove it?

Yours looks like the first pucture Rem? I thought they were all the same. My '10 looks like the second pic.

My 08 (build date of Sept 07) has the tube style.

It's just a resonator to make the intake quieter. It was likely removed to cut costs. Early KJs also had an intake resonator, removed for '04 model year.

You too can eliminate your resonator by getting the later tube.
