yuck FWD, FIS, only thing it has going for it is the great gas mileage but will be no better than a ford escape offroad.

Why can't they atleast change the name? I love how the article said Xterra drivers will want this. The Xterra is the Liberty now, just with leafs in the back instead of springs. They don't want a full independent suspension fwd crossover... I feel bad for Jeep...

Let's just hope that Chrysler designs the body similar to current Liberty but with LED tail lights and projector headlights and some other upgrades while still maintaining its off-road look. Hopefully they wont make the mistake of designing the body similar to that Alfa Romeo in that test mule.

Seems like, in the future, the only mod friendly, true off-road Jeep will be the Wrangler.

What a shame :(

All they really needed to do was refresh the current interior and drop the 3.6 into our current body type.

not so nice grill :ROTFL: What Jeep needs to do is bring back an redefined affordable solid axle 4.0 Cherokee with black steel tucked bumpers and able to fit 31's without a lift, diffs that will show up the Toyota FJ on the trail. Make the diesel Compass the fuel-efficient capable 4x4 next generation Samurai. Jeep was a leader and not a follower in the early days, these new Fiat/Jeep things are going to prove them wrong when sales dwindle again. Oh yah I forgot, we are all rich and can afford 40K Grands and Rubicons, so who cares about the 20K car market buyers. My Jeep's bumpers and fenders are a plastic joke as is now when I come to think about it; for as the XJs mpg and power was just fine the way it was twenty years ago. "They don't make them like they used to" :banghead:

XJ will not meet current safety and emissions standards and barely met them during production.

That is nothing more then a Nancy-boy Fiat with a taller stance, yuck! If I wanted something like that I would get a Porsche or VW, then at least I'd have something worth owning. Back in my day, a Fiat was nothing more then a poor mans econo-box sports car. I see nothing has changed at Fiat. :banghead:

Would you guys calm down? It's just a mule. It shows nothing about the final product.

Everyone understands that this was just a mule right? Theres just internals for the new Liberty in that, the body will look different(hopefully).

I know you did lol But I'm in the same boat as you. I feel the Liberty was meant to be the affordable vehicle that is semi-capable offroad but still has some street manners, where as the Wrangler is just built to wheel. What they're doing here is turning the Liberty into the next Patriot/Compass, but are still keeping those(or is it 1 of them? Idk lol).

Yeah Agreed^^

looks like we will either have to settle for the Wrangler (4 door for me) or go for purely car based Jeep options (or jump ship  to yota or nissan etc)

You are right Marlon, I just get frustrated with all the plastic on today's vehicles. When I look at most of the newer cars on the road, I noticed mainly trucks only still have metal bumpers not integrated with the cars body. The plastic foam-filled bumpers are lighter and keeps us safer in high speed auto accidents. I do like the 2012 Compass body with a straighter body style and raised hood, for it looks like a mini-grand. It would be nice if the Freedom II still got over 25 mpg in everyday driving and had a better transmission. Saw the new Tesla sedan today while working at their headquarters, looks sharp and will be available this Summer but out of my price range. A thing for us to realize is the cost of gas at 25,000 miles per year adds up to the cost of the standard SUV vehicles in five years roughly, and if prices soar sky high then a savings in mpg per month can equal an economical car payment. So Jeep is thinking ahead for better mpg vehicles, just hope they can maintain the great capability of dirt road and snow driving too. Just my :2cents: , no offence...

Glad my KK has a lifetime warranty on it's eng/tranny because it looks like short of going over to a KJ, I won't be getting one of these things anytime soon. When I seen the pic, I thought of this. Image

Why don't they just discontinue the liberty/Cherokee and be done with it. They obviously don't give a crap about off road ability. A crossover is a car, an suv is not. There aren't enough true suv's out there anymore, at least they aren't made here. Looks like the only option is to build one. I could go on and on but I'd just be preaching to the choir.

That mule is fugly, but I'm sure the final product will look a lot better. Chrysler has been doing a good job with their new vehicles and I see no reason to believe they won't come through with this too.

Love the nine speed, love the smaller Pentastar (which will still be significantly more powerful than the 3.7), still hoping for 30+ mpg highway out of this thing. Everybody's jumping to conclusions that this won't have any off-road chops just because of the platform, but as long as it still comes with true 4wd, who cares whether the front or rear wheels are being driven the rest of the time? If it lets them build something fuel-efficient and capable I say more power to them. But until somebody gets a chance to drive one we just aren't going to know what it can do. Honestly, I can't see them going too far down the soft roader path unless they're planning to consolidate all three of the Liberty, Compass, and Patriot vehicles into one. Otherwise if they do, this is going to be stomping all over the Compass/Patriot replacement's turf and that would be stupid.
