Post subject:  Light bulb under PRND21 shifter

Hi Jeepers,
I need to replace the light bulb under my center console shifter bezel (if that's what it's called). It's the bulb that lights up the PRND21 indicator at night. I got the bulb out-- it's not that hard after removing the panel around the shifter. The problem is, nobody seems to have a replacement. I've been to Advance Auto, Autozone, and Pep Boys. I've tried bulbs that looked like they were the same size, but to no avail. They just don't fit in the socket because the light has a thin base.

So where can I get a replacement bulb? The number written on the bulb is, JKL EWG 203.

Thanks in advance! --LFH

Summit racing may have something also. They sell some MOPAR stuff and usually for less than dealer cost.

Today I finally found a replacement bulb! The EWG203 bulb has to be about the rarest automotive light bulb on earth. Just about everywhere has 0 in stock. I found them on eBay for $14 a pair, which I couldn't bring myself to pay. I tried Sylvania 73 and 74 bulbs from the auto parts store, but even though they look similar, their base is too large to fit into the socket. The Jeep dealer said they'd sell me a new shifter bezel with the light included :ROTFL: but I'm not so OCD about my Jeep that I'm willing to pay $35 for a little bulb. So here's my solution...

Go to a Toyota dealership and tell their parts guy/gal that you are looking for a replacement bulb for a '99 Corolla. It's a bulb behind the climate controls in the center of the dash. There are two bulbs there, but you only need one replaced. $5 later I had my bulb! It's not exactly the same shape (it's a bit narrower at the top), but the base is exactly the same as the EWG203 and it works!!!

Case closed. Hope this helps somebody down the line. :D

I to have a indicator light out on my 08. Could you shed some light as to where the bulb is located and what has to be done to replace it. Dealer want to sell me a new shifter assembly.
Thanks

Pull up the plastic trim piece on the center console (in front of the cupholders) from the rear corners first. Unclip the wire harness from underneath the 4WD shifter, then you can fully remove the trim. Once that trim piece is out of the way, look at the drivers side of the black PRND21 block. You will see a pair of small blue (I think) wires there running to the light socket. Turn the light socket 90 degrees, then you can pull it out to access the light.

Any unintended acceleration issues?

You know, since your Jeep is now part Toyota. :-)r

:ROTFL: Awesome, Marlon. No, no unintended acceleration. I should have gotten a Prius bulb instead to help with my MPG's!

The Toyota bulb is still running strong! There are no issues with it. Thought you might like an update.

Hey there!

I am new to this forum, pursuing my ultimate goal to be as much of a DIY'er with repairs and maintenance as I can…there is just something satisfying about knowing how all the parts move, connect and yaddi ya, saving money is an obvious incentive, so enough of all that, and on to my need for someones two cents.

I have an 03 Liberty Limited and I need to replace the, yep you guessed it :), light bulb under the shifter knob. I haven't removed anything yet to get to the bulb to find the #, so if anyone knows what it is or what bulb can be used in place of the original one, I am all ears.

Thanks in advance

First of all, welcome to LOST! :JEEPIN:

It is nice to know you can save a ton of :2cents: doing things yourself. This forum helps a lot with that, and doing it yourself is satisfying. On the other hand, reading LOST puts ideas in your head about some very cool Jeep mods... And those cost :2cents: :dizzy:

To your question, you may want to try reposting it in the KJ General Discussion section. The KJ Liberty is the 02-07 model. The KK Liberty is the boxier one built between 08-12. You have a KJ, but are in the KK forum. While many things are the same or similar between the models, I don't know if the interior light bulbs are the same.

Good luck finding your answer!
