has anyone ventured to doing there on front and rear ring and pinions? If so is it more of a difficult project or more oaf a time consuming one? |

Best left to the professionals. You need specialized tools and micro meters. But plenty of people have had their gears switched out. Sent with the power of children's screams!! |

Try sending a pm to Ted15, helluva nice guy who recently had his gears done by a major 4wd parts store chain iirc. He's nowhere near us or anything but might be able to fill you in with info. |

My advice is to find a shop that does nothing but diff and axle repair... |

Diggerfreek wrote: My advice is to find a shop that does nothing but diff and axle repair... X2 I first went to 4 Wheel Drive Hardware in Columbiana, Ohio. It turned out that the "gear specialist" there wasn't worth a hill of beans. He didn't set the pinion gears properly. After a couple trips trying to get them to fix the problem, I took it to 4 Wheel Parts in Parma, Ohio. Same company with a much better mechanic. He fixed the rear but he won't open the front to check it. What I've learned, Take it to a place that specializes in drive trains and get references, don't trust a nationwide company's reputation at face value. I've tried several times to get them to at least check the front diff. He'll drive it, put it on a rack and listed to it go but he refuses to drop the axle and open it up. I think I'm going to have to write the main office to make them open it of refund my money so I can pay for someone else to do it. I guess the bottom line is take it to someone you trust, it's a very expensive project. It's also a good time to add a locker or something. ![]() I do have to say though, the thing runs great with the new gears. |

The 4 wheel parts here in the Dallas area straight up told me they would not do much on a Liberty or Commander..they did not have the skill to do it and those 2 models were just too hard to lift, align, work on, etc. Guy told me they had one, yes ONE Liberty come get a spacer lift and they never could get it to align right so they decided not to do any more...I shook my head and left never to return after that. I never have found a good 4x4 shop around here |

I still find it funny as all he** when Custom 4 WHEEL DRIVE SHOPS say how hard it is to work on a IFS Jeep , no matter what you do to them Local place says the same thing, when I was in there to get a estimate on a ARB replacement they were all over mine wanting to know who lifted it. When I told them I had been involved in over 30 they told me I must be a da** fool since its way too hard to lift KJs/KKs ![]() They can "replace " parts on a TJ/JK but give them anything else and bam they are done. Had another shop tell me how hard it was to do gears on a KJ when they had just done a set on a XJ ( same rear diff) Fronts are easy to drop out, doesn't take long at all Parts replacers instead of real mechanics at most of those places |

Aren't ALL 4x4's, with the exception of Wranglers, for now IFS? How is it they can work on Chevys, Fords, etc and not understand Libertys? Especially Toyotas, they've been IFS for a long time. I think the term grease monkey applies here. They seem to be Wrangler mechanics, not Jeep mechanics. Oh, I asked if they could just drop the diff enough to pop the cover and let the CV's move in as it came down to prevent disassembling the wheels. The guy told me it couldn't be done and that the axles done move like that. In the same conversation he told me he doesn't know very much about Libertys, and apparently won't listen to someone who does. Has anyone written the management for 4 Wheel Parts? |

Then it won't need duffs cause ittl float over rocks. Sent from my iPhone 5 |

Because you have to do a little bit more than pull springs out and replace with new ones? Like you said... parts replacers... |
