I haven't really been on the forum much since getting my Mazdaspeed Miata as my toy but recently I wanted to start modifying the Liberty more. I wanted more light options for when I hit the trails for deer hunting season so I decided to add the fog lights to my headlights. Expecting our 1st child on the way I had to be thrifty and sneaky about purchasing the parts so Mopar kit wasn't an option as the Mrs would notice the missing $300 pretty quickly. So here's how I did it.

Ordered the Standard Motor Products headlight switch with maintenance items from RockAuto.com-$26
Found the fog light harness mopar # 05166846AA on ebay for $25
Found aftermarket headlights on ebay for $125

But there's a problem, the patch harness that plugs into the totally integrated power module is not available for purchase so what I did was buy the entire connector repair kit, Mopar # 68032279AA, for $64. I only used 2 of the 52 wires included in the kit but that just means I can offer the extra wires for sale for those who want to do the same as I did.

With the right wires pined into the correct location on the existing harness connector it was just a matter of cutting off the wire connector on the mopar fog light harness and splicing in the newly pined wires. Run the harness and attach the new headlights. Once its all said and done it has to go to the dealership so they can tell the Liberty to turn on fog light controls. $54 later I have working fogs.

Total cost for parts: $240 vs the $300 for the kit. I probably could have saved 10 bucks by making my own fog light harness but $10 is worth not having to do the extra work.

On a different note, I do have 10 fog light "hack" kits ready for anyone who wants to do as I did. Using my hack kit and making your own fog light harness would bring the total cost for parts to around $176. Kits are just $10 shipped and can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=35&t=78541

Not being a fan of chrome I also baked the headlights, opened them up, removed the chrome fascia inside the headlight and painted them matte black. To complete the look I plastidiped the front grill. :pepper:

What?

Oh, and nice work. Those fog lights are great for country driving.

Johnny, you can bake the headlights to separate them and paint the bezels yourself. It helps save a few bucks for those that want the blacked out Renegade/Jet headlights, or who just don't like the chrome and want to customize it.

In the oven, at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, for 25 minutes?

You can get the connector part from a PT cruiser or caliber and just re-pin the ends of that as well, which is what I did. You can buy the pins for like 10 cents on mouser if you know which ones you need.

250 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes does the trick.

And that was the trouble I was running into, I couldn't find any information on what type of pin to use. Other wise there are lots of Chrysler vehicle that use that fog light harness. Having the connector between the integrated power module & fog light harness didn't bother me so I just snipped it off.

That looks very similar to what I want to do...not sure if I have the knowledge/skill to do it myself though.

Taking the grill & headlights out is the easy part. Baking the headlights isn't too hard, just use 250 degrees Fahrenheit at 15min. Pull out all the oven racks except one & place that one rack on the lowest rung in the oven. Cover the rack with aluminum foil to prevent melting. I also suggest using a cookie sheet as well. Once baked you got a couple mins to pry it open with a screwdriver before it cools. If you can't get open before it cools just pop it the oven for 10 more minutes. Once the lens is off, the entire chrome bezel comes out minus the reflectors. Paint & reassemble. The grill is just plastidip which is like a thick spray paint but once dried it can be peeled off if it gets nicked or you decide you don't like it. Not extremely difficult & if you lived nearby I'd gladly show you how.

I have a 2011 Sport, do you know if this will definitely work? Chrysler says that the overlay harness #05166846AA will only work on 2007-2010 and that for 2011 you need to buy a complete front harness with connectors for the headlights, fog lights and side marker lights for $300.00. Is this true? I have already purchased a set of headlights with fogs from a 2012 and a new headlight switch with fogs and auto. Just need to be able to get them wired and the sales code updated hopefully to have them work. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

I can't positively say it will work simply because the mopar connection repair website does not list an available repair kit for the plug and wires that controls the front lighting from the TIPM. The mopar connection repair kit I use is 68032279AA which looks like it covers the 08-10 Liberty.

Looking at the mopar connection repair website, I'd say it may be possible to use one of my hack kit and overlay harness #05166846AA but believe the pin out diagram is different each year with only 2008 and 2009 sharing the same diagram.

Another concern is the Mopar fog light kit only shows 2008 & 2009 for available years. You may want to contact your local dealership to be sure the can even add the sales code for your model year.

I have everything installed, the jumper harness is part # 05166845AA and it has 2 white/yellow wires that come out of the connector and then are connected together with a single lead and covered in heat shrink tubing. Jeep couldn't find a part number for the one that comes in the OEM fog kit and I got this number off of one of the forums. This one is listed for a 2005-2007 Chrysler 300 @ Dodge Charger. It plugs into my fog harness and when I touch it to the positive battery terminal they light up. Any ideas on how to make this work? If I leave it alone and plug the end into the #16 cavity on the connector which it says to do for the yellow/white wire that comes in the kit will it work or will I have to separate them wiring each one to the separate #11 and #16 cavity spots on the connector by making one wire the orange/white wire? If so where do I get the wire to do this with that has the pin on the end of it already?

I apologize for the delayed response, work has been super busy this weekend. You'll want to separate the positive wires if 05166845AA has them combined as the TIPM controls the right & left fog lights independently & I'm willing to bet it won't like trying to power them both off one lead. Also I believe the wiring diagram is different but I may have the diagrams for 2010, 2011 & 2012, just need a guinea pig for each year to verify. Free hack kit for the guinea pigs.

Everything is installed but I cannot the wires into the connector. The #11 and #16 cavity is not an open pass through cavity on my connector so the pins will not connect with the pins in the IPM. :(

So I've been thinking about that, I wonder if the cavity on the connector has to be broken out just like they do on page 6 of these instructions.

Of course I'd say attempt at your own risk. Otherwise I do have a spare blank gray TIPM connector but that would require you to remove all the stock wires from your's & insert into the new connector which would be time consuming and introduce a possibility of incorrectly installing wiring & frying something.

Yeah, the connector has to be broken out. Since it is a sealed connector, the unused cavities are plugged. Here's the connector sheet: http://www.molex.com/pdm_docs/as/AS-33472-100.pdf
