So I've spent the last 2 weekends making these

Can you guess what they are?

Tow hook mounting plates?

Or a mount for lights.

:BINGO:

Funny that you mentioned tow hook mounts as I probably over built them, they are rock solid and pretty sure they could hold my body weight standing on them. They replace the fake "vent" on the fender. My lights should be here Wednesday so we'll see if I measured it correctly and how it looks with lights. Here they are mounted.

Thanks guys, I'm excited to get the lights on. It only took 1 weekend to build this set but I went through 2 versions. Version 1.0 used 1/8" steel plate for the blanking plates and straps. I didn't like how the blanking plates started to bend ever so slightly when welding the straps on. These are the version 2.0 using 1/4" steel blanking plates with 1/8" straps and 1/4" steel fog light mounts. I did run into a little problem after welding the fog light mounts at a 90 degree angle to the blanking plates. This caused the mounts to stick upward looking a little like wings rather than level with the mirrors. Easy enough fix, cut a 1/4" slit on the underside of the mounts, bend down at a 70 degree angle and weld it back up. $15 in steel plates, a few cut off wheels and some hardware. I'm currently only about $20 in these. To be honest it probably could be built from a single piece of 1/8" steel or aluminum bent accordantly. I may even make a version 3.0 in aluminum using that method if I can find a big enough piece.

Just an FYI, those vents can be made functional

Ok.... but Jeep didn't intend for them to be used that way so I stand by fake.

Did you mod them? I just removed them a while ago.

I love the Idea! If you can make more for a reasonable price I'll buy a set. was there any cutting involved?

There is 100% no cutting involved, it uses front hole for the fake vent using a u nut and uses the fender bolt as the 2nd mounting point. If at any point you want to remove them and go back to stock it can be done w/o any evidence that they where previously installed.

Here is the million dollar question, what would you expect to pay for a product like this? Making more may be an option if version 3.0 proves less labor intensive than using my junky welder and trying to clean it up afterward.

My 2 cents they also might make good antenna mounts

Those are interesting but I gotta couple of questions. How is it mounted? How badly does it obstruct your view while driving? Surely you couldn't mount 6" lights to it without it being an obvious obstruction. How's the glare off the hood? I'm not trying to knock your design at all, there's more than one way to skin a cat. Heck I have some questions about my own design that can't be answered until I mount some lights. It's cool to see I'm not the only one wanting more lights. Heck I'd stick some on the roof if it wasn't for poor clearance pulling into the garage :banghead:

toy4everyseason - This is the exact kind of mod that should have been available from the factory or put out by an aftermarket company. Simple design, and relatively cheap I'd assume. Can't wait to see some lights mounted.
Things you should worry about which I'm sure you have already is that these mounts might cause some extra noises and the lights will probably cause a little more drag. I know this is a forum for Jeeps, but ya know, gas ain't cheap.

They are mounted to the hood mount, I had the same idea and was in the process of building a two light mount for both sides :)

Gage, I'm still waiting for you to sell yours and buy a Prius the way you talk about fuel economy on this forum... Drag created by two lights (that are in front of the side mirrors by the way) = 0.00001 less MPG! OH NO :ROTFL: Haha, it's too much fun messing with you

Great idea and execution. Is there sufficient room to run the wires to the lights? That would be my only question. It seems like this mount would be a good way to avoid hood glare.
