Hi, My 2008 Cherokee/Liberty KK (3.7L) squeals when the steering in full lock - left or right. I had recently replaced the serpentine belt and the belt tensioner. The sound started only after the parts were replaced. The sound is only when the steering is in full lock position and mostly when engaging the reverse. What could be the reason for this sound, any help would be appreciated. Nabeel |

It could come from under tension on the belt. Have you tried to remove and re install? check for belt shavings or wear marks on the belt. |

A few drivers complain about how the Liberty acts at full lock. Mine probably makes a slight noise at full lock, but it's extremely rare that I would ever need to turn the wheel that much anyways. Without actually hearing the sound, it might be normal and a coincidence that it happened after the repairs or was always there. |

Thanks Gageraid and Tiltmfc for your feedback. The sound started only after the parts were replaced. I know this for sure because I started noticing it when i try reversing into my parking. I have been doing this act for a number of years now and never had this squealing sound before. Like Tiltmfc has advised, I am planning to visit my garage this weekend and try re-installing the belt tensioner and the serpentine belt once over. Hopefully, this should solve the issue. Also, reading up on the issue, i came across the info that the belt tensioner assembly need to be torqued specifically at 41Nm. I will ask my mechanic to do that as well using a torque wrench and see it helps. Will keep you guys posted if I am able to solve the issue. Thank again for your feedback. |

Don't hold full lock in the steering for more then 1-2 seconds. At that point your PS pump is making max pressure with nowhere to go.It's pretty normal for the belt to "squeal" at full lock on most vehicles as it's saying "stop it" as it is bad for your pump. |

If your new belt is making noise your tensioner maybe worn that is why you should always replace the auto tensioner when you replace the belt.A quality belt also helps, not the cheapest poly belt you can find.A EPDM belt is best like ones made by Gates. |

I changed the belt tensioner as well as the serpentine belt during my last major service (80,000 kms). Both the parts were original Mopar parts. I will take it to my garage and try re-installing the belt tensioner and the serpentine belt with the correct torque this weekend. Hopefully, that should solve the problem. I will keep you guys posted on it. Thanks for the feedback. |
