Saw that I needed to paint my trailer hitch yesterday and had an idea to weld tabs to the sides of the hitch to mount some d-rings, has anyone else considered this yet? I searched but found nothing, seems like a good way to add some solid recovery points and a nice look without the weight of a whole new bumper. I would think it would work nicely with the non-factory hitches since they sit lower. Just seeing if anyone else considered this or if I'm missing something before I try it. Image

(Not my jeep in the pictures)

Has been done before many times in other vehicles, I have done it back in the day on a KJ. Worked just fine. But now looking back on it, just get a slip in D ring mount for the center and call it good. Easier, pretty much same price and if you ever wanted to sell the hitch you could.

Yeah true it would be easier but I think it would be a good look and function at the same time, plus it gives me an excuse to break out the welder haha

Sorry for the crude drawing, but this is what i would do.

Place the shackle tab on the inside of the mount. That will give you area to weld onto the main tube too. I dont know if your tube is square or round, if round, just notch the tab just a hair.

I'm probably gonna place it to the outside of the bracket to get it lower, I don't think I have the clearance between the bar and the bumper to go inside the bracket

This might be a bit easier...

http://detoursusa.com/c3r.php

But it's a bit better to get the shackle mount that goes in your receiver tube. It's stronger and requires zero modifications...

That wouldn't work with my hitch, the area it would connect to is round on mine, i actually have all the material I need laying around. The only thing that I'm unsure about is if dumping that much heat into it would adversely affect the strength of the hitch but I don't think it would I'll have any problems

Not sure why no one has mentioned this yet...

Cheaper, less work, and does the same job as the shackle tab but distributes the load evenly on the hitch.

Think everyone so far has mentioned those...

I missed 4x4kayak s post. I'm known for that...

Probably should read a little more in-depth. Stayed up till 4 last night going through the kk discussion board, and boy was I impressed.
