Can you recommend a seriously good marine-grade sealer? My roof is leaking in 3 places :furious: (where the roof rack bolts attach, drivers side front and rear, and passengers side rear). I only want to deal with this once. I'm going to take the Rola basket and roof bars off this week and seal the crap out of all 4 side rail attachments, and I want to use something good, something foolproof. Something marine-grade so it never leaks again. If I flip the KK over in a lake, I want it to float! So what is the best stuff out there for sealing metal, but that still remains slightly flexible under stress (like when there is a load of camping gear on the roof) and can survive freeze-thaw in winter?

3m 540 if you want to be able to remove the parts some time later or 5200 if you want it to be there till the end of time

Thanks for the input, everyone. 3M 5200 sounds like the way to go.

Does anyone have any tips for removing the plastic covers on either end of the roof side rails without breaking them? Are there hidden clips under there that need to be disengaged? I need to take off the covers first to expose the nuts and remove the rails. Once the rails are off, I'll do the sealing around the bolts/studs.

When I replaced my rails, I just pulled right on up and they popped easily. I believe I focused on getting the back sides first, but it may not even matter.

I need to do the same thing soon, just add it to the never ending list of maintenance..

Ok, I got a tube of 3M 5200 Marine Adhesive Sealant, and am in the process of fixing the leaks.

The saga of my leaky roof is on a different thread, so here is the link if you'd like to follow along with the solution. There are pics and lots of details. http://www.lostjeeps.com/forum/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=834175#p834175
