P0740 Jeep - Torque Converter Clutch Circuit

Possible causes

- Low transmission fluid level
- Dirty transmission fluid
- Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid valve
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve harness is open or shorted
- Torque converter clutch solenoid valve circuit poor electrical connection

When is the code detected?

Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) unlocked for 10 sec., ECM commands converter lock-up and did not record engine speed drop.

Possible symptoms

- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Transmission shift shock
- Vehicle may not shift into the highest gear

P0740 Jeep Description

The torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, with the gear in D4, by the Transmission Control Module (TCM) in response to signals sent from the vehicle speed and the Engine Control Module (ECM). Lock-up piston operation will then be controlled. When the torque converter clutch solenoid valve is activated, the torque converter lockup clutch will engage creating a 1 to 1 RPM ratio between the transmission input shaft and the rotational speed of the torque converter.

Lock-up operation, however, is prohibited when A/T fluid temperature is too low.

When the accelerator pedal is depressed (less than 2/8) in lock-up condition, the engine speed should not change abruptly. If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up.

Update for you all. They did indeed fry my TIPM with their starscan tool. Which for me means a brand new unit with free install courtesy of the dealership. I can last one more day in a 2013 dart right? :grim:

Nope they're footing the bill for this one. And more if it's not done tomorrow. I run a business with my jeep. Days without it are days not making money

Haha I didn't intend to get a new tipm. Just to have my existing one updated. But good news is the new one is going in now and I'll have her back by the afternoon

Swapped out water pump and thermostat. Had an odd no start when warm issue pop up. Wasn't getting coolant through the top rad hose. I had heard a squeak for a week or so. Guess it finally gave way. Doesn't spin at all

And just after posting that I got a misfire in 6. Thinking this may be related to the dealer and my new tipm. Giving them a call later today.

::Update:: going in to the same dealership tomorrow for a free diagnosis. Stay tuned, this should be fun

Hopefully it's just another coil pack.

My misfire ended being a fuel injector in 3 actually.
My main issue is that no scan tool will connect to my system. Power is there. But not getting a connection. This is what the dealer will be diagnosing for me

So it's been quite a ride these past couple months. Never quite ran right after the first TIPM issue.

Skip right to the bottom for a breakdown of all my new parts!

Just before Christmas I noticed I was losing a TON of trans fluid to the street every morning. Since the holiday would have me driving 2+ hours uphill to my parents off to the dealer I went. Turns out my transmission cooler was leaking, so I have them the go ahead to replace that as well as flush my transmission system for me. This was Sat the 19th

Here's where it gets intetesting. I take a break from work to go pick her up. Everything is fine on the 2 minute drive back to work. On the actual commute home I notice some new knocking noises while I'm sitting at idle. They went away with any acceleration. This is Monday night

Twice on my 45 minute ride home I get my trans temp light and pull over for 15 minutes. Called up my grandfather after Google gave me every answer from its a fluke to your car needs a new transmission. We come to the decision for me to make it home and see what the morning brings.

And off to work I go the next morning without issue! Or so I thought. Sitting at the light to merge onto the highway. It turns green and I step on the gas. One giant lurch and a rev up to 4k and then nothing. Engine still running fine. I try all the gears available to me, 4hi, 4lo. And get nothing. It was like being in park.

Have myself and the jeep towed over to the dealer closer to my home. Another day goes by and I find out I need a new transmission quoted at a cool 3600$.

At this point I trust no dealer's work. I've got a strange feeling I never got my requested transmission "flush" (all fluids pulled via vacuum) and just had my pan dropped and topped off. The service tech "off the record" agreed with me that some old sludge or fluid got pushed through and tore something up.

So I have a tech slightly on my side, great. After an afternoon of dealer calls and being on hold, they agree to pay for all my dagnostic work done after the cooler install and pay for the tow to the shop I want the work done at. Transmission shop received the car Monday morning via tow. And I picked her up last night at 530.

Now if you stayed with me through all of that I thank you. But long story short:

New torque converter
New transmission cooler
Rebuilt transmission done by a reputable specialty shop with a 3 year warranty.
243,000mi

And a big thank you to Jerrys Transmission in Guilford, CT
