NAM, bmxer, Tom, any others welcome, I need to remove my gas tank skid plate (paper weight) due to it being pretty bashed up. The tank is at a quarter tank currently and was wondering how much I can drop the tank with out yanking out the sensors and fill tubes. I plan on doing this any time Monday morning or Tuesday. Of curse with the aid of a jack.

I personally never dropped my tank. I've read that there's a lot of play in it though. NAM has dropped his. He can probably give some more insight.

Just remember 1/4 of 20 gallons is still 5 gallons (I know we have a 19.5 gallon tank, I'm rounding lol). Assuming gas weighs 8lbs a gallon (like water) you're looking at 40lbs in gas alone. Most people that I've seen drop the tank run it almost bone dry.

PA, I used this write up when I dropped my gas tank holder and replaced it with the skid plate version. It worked pretty well, and I did need a jack to function as a third arm, but it would have been easier with a second person helping. I put 18 and 1/2 gallons in after the process, so I had used up all but one gallon of fuel in the tank when I did it!

PA, I set jack stands to be fed through the holes of the skid plate so that when it rest on those enough so I can run a ratchet strap though the rear doors and around the tank. After that was installed I ran another from the hitch to wrap around the transfer case crossmember. After that you can remove the jack stands and drop the skid plate. If you want you can remove the driveshaft too but you can finangle the plate out without taking the driveshaft out.
