Hello,

I'm planning a move from New England to Georgia. The cheapest way might be to buy a 16x7 foot V-nose trailer, make two trips and then sell the trailer.

Does anyone have an idea of what gas mileage I might expect with a 5000 pound tow load? I 2012 KK with the factory tow package, and the trailer will be tandem with brakes on all wheels.

Also, does anyone have a recommendation for towing mirrors or see anything wrong with this plan?

It's the limit of the KK so just keep an eye on everything and use the tow button. Being stock I'd assume 10-12mpg. Some of the other guys that do a lot of towing would probably know better.

Some long interstate trip mpg averages from my experience:

Towed a 6x10 dual axle U-Haul trailer (loaded) 600 miles through PA and OH to MI... 60 mph with Tow/Haul mode engaged... 10-12 mpg.

Towed a 6x8 single axle flatbed trailer (empty) 300 miles from VA to PA... 65 mph with Tow/Haul mode engaged... 14 mpg.

Towing nothing, 65 mph, using overdrive... 16-18 mpg. (Lifted 4 inches, 31 inch tires, roof basket, not regeared)

Towing nothing, 65 mph, using overdrive, stock KK... 20-22 mpg.

10mpg. Lifted with 31" mudterrains and steel bumper towing a v6 Ford Escape for 1800 miles from florida to Texas. Tow button all the time
Average speed 65- 70 mph.

Why not rent a Uhaul box truck and tow the libby behind it. 1 trip and done, less wear and tear on the libby and if the Uhaul breaks down it their problem not yours. The diesel trucks aren't horrible on fuel.

Sometimes the trailer makes sense. If you don't have a ton of stuff to fill a big truck, or you have a long move and can't afford the per mile rate for the truck, the trailer can be rented for only about $150.

Uhaul is more expensive than buying a cargo trailer, using it and then selling it. Plus by owning one, you get to pack on your schedule, and drive on your schedule -- not theirs.

Plus you can't fit a house into any trailer they rent, and their trucks are way over priced. The other rental agencies are not much better on cost.

Moving companies want 7-10000 for the job.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

...I know the manual says the towing capacity for the KK is 5000 lb -- but googling around, I found posts indicating the tow capacity in Europe is 7000. One post ended with the comment that a Jeep manager when asked about said the US has more lawyers on the staff.

I would not expect to be over 5000, but I'm not going to worry about it either.
