Surface rust on axle tubes? Best way to stop it dead?

Good evening,

Since moving from Georgia to the Chicago area last year, my KK had to survive the Midwest winter for the first time. So many cars around here are simply rust buckets, basically rotting away on the frame. I don't want my KK to end up like this as i am planning on keeping it for a very long time (heck, it's paid off after all).

I noticed the other day that surface rust is starting on the axle tubes and some other suspension parts. The frame and everything is fine, but I want to be pro-active here...

I do not have the means to get it sandblasted and powder coated. I looked into POR15, but from what I understand it would require a clean surface to begin with.

Does anybody here have any guidance on what is best to do in my situation? I can certainly clean (wire wheel, sandpaper) some parts when I am underneath the vehicle, but what should I use afterwards to protect it? Simple primer and spray paint?

What would give me the most durable finish? It doesn't have to be showroom quality, it simply needs to be functional and withstand the nasty salt and chemicals they use here in the winter...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Sand and paint is all you really can do.

I plan on repainting my rear axle this summer with Rustoluem Hammered Black. Probably my control arms and other metals too.

WOW! Awesome job! turned out great.

I don't think i get the chance to remove the axle though. While I have the tools, the KK is my daily driver. I think the wife would protest...

POR-15 might be something to look into.. I painted a bumper with it, but it seriously took three days to dry. My climate is really arid, and that stuff needs humidity to activate the curing process. Shot real nice out of an hvlp gun too.

I've used POR 15 on vehicles in Vermont. Its a waste of time and money. -- And it was applied correctly, with the metal cleaned and etched before application.

My best experience so far has been to use UPOL Acid 8 self-etching primer covered with a fairly good paint like Nesson. See a store that sells to auto body people.
