My girlfriend took the Jeep to the airport Monday morning and left it parked until last night. I drove it for the first time this morning and when I pulled into my office parking lot and turn the wheels almost full lock while still rolling, I heard this metal grinding noise. It almost reminds me of having a rock stuck in your brakes that makes an awful racket until it falls out. It made the same noise while backing at almost full lock. I went out for a quick test drive and the noise isn't there when driving straight or when turning the wheel back and forth. I attempted a couple more sharp steering maneuvers and the noise was intermittent. I also looked underneath real quick and didn't notice anything obvious, with the exception of some oil on the passenger's side front wheel. It looked to be pretty dry though. Any thoughts on where to start looking? '12 KK with 30,8xx miles. |

I just went out for a quick cruise and the grinding was there even when driving straight. It comes at random and definitely sounds like it's coming from the rear. I can't figure out what actions make it replicate. |

Look for a rock in your brake caliper. |

I looked briefly but didn't see anything. Wouldn't it be more of a constant noise than intermittent? |

I had 1 rock make a constant noise, and a mother make intermittent noise. Pull the wheels off and check for rocks first. Always start with the easiest/cheapest stuff lol |

Yeah that's what I'm going to do later today, hopefully. A buddy has a lift in his shop so I'm going to go get it in the air and see what's doing. |

Check the rubber boots on your front axle CV's (particularly the right one, since you said you may have found some oil oil/grease). Also check the CV boot on the front drive shaft where it goes into the transfer case. If any boots have split and shot out all the grease, then likely there is your culprit. |

The sound came back while traveling straight, too, but was still intermittent. I haven't heard it recently so I now suspect a rock, although I'm not sure where the oil/grease substance on my wheel came from. I still need to track that down. CVs for the front axles looked good but I didn't look at the drive shaft yet. |
