I got bored while camping so popped the hood for a simple visual check, and noticed no extra coolant was in that upper reservoir next to the radiator. Are you guys usually seeing some coolant fluid in that plastic reservoir? The engine temp has been steady but just wondering what's normal / abnormal. (This was on an 60 degree day after the engine had been off for several hours.)

There are Max and Min lines on the coolant reservoir. If filled to the medium level when cold, it will rise to the max when hot. In winter, when cold, it might be at min. If you are seeing no coolant at all in the reservoir, that isn't good.

Buy a bottle of HOAT coolant (Mopar or Xerex) and fill to halfway between Min and Max, then keep an eye on the level and see if it goes down over the next week or two. If your coolant disappears, and you don't see any of it leaking on your driveway, you might have a head gasket leak. Any steam in your exhaust?

Glad to hear you haven't overheated. That's good news.

I have added a small amount of coolant to mine, because it does seem to slowly evaporate. I maybe have to add a pint or two every year since I got it in 2011. I am still on the same gallon of coolant I started with 4 years ago, so it is not much. But maybe your coolant has slowly gone down and you just noticed it now. If you refill the reservoir and it stays at a good level, then you are probably fine.

Thought it couldn't be good but I'm a n00b KK owner so wanted to make sure. Just one more reason to eyeball things ourselves even if the gauges say "all's well".

Sadly, we park on the street so I can't tell if there's excessive drip from our Jeep or the handful of others on the block, but I've not noticed any steam.

I'll fill it up halfway and watch it. Ty!

I had something similar happen and coolant was seeping through the bearing on the water pump. The goodish news is that it will get on the belt and fling everywhere, so if you see dried coolant on the airbox, hood cover, and battery, chances are that is what is happening.

Good news! No leak.

After a 700mil trip and 2 more weeks of intown errands, the coolant level looks to be where I filled it. Maybe the previous guy left the cap loose and it just evaporated? Anyways, nice to have some spare coolant on hand now just incase.

Thx lfhoward!
