I just purchased a 2008 liberty 4wd with 30k original miles on it.Got it at my local carmax, super clean super nice. While driving home yesterday from the dealer I noticed a brake smell and little smoke when I stopped from the pass rear.I drove on home only a few miles..didn't see anything visibly wrong.Done some reading today and seems rear brake caliper sticking a common issue. Is this something where the caliber bolts need polishing and greasing..or is there a deeper issue?

welcome to lost!

you must have payed near new price for that kk! my liberty is a 2012, bought it with 12k on the odo currently sits at 30k.

first things first. check the brake fluid resivuar. if its close to max, your good.

visually inspect the line while a friend presses lightly on the brake pedal. look for a leak.

or just take it back since theres like a 30 day limited warranty on all cars. let then inspect it if you don't want to.

there are a lot of other possible "issues" that the smoke can relate to.

check back here when solved or unsolved.

i had the same issue. i had to buy a new caliper from jeep. didnt take long to replace. just a reminder if you didnt know there are brake shoes on the inside of the rotor. i was unaware of that and really didnt pay attention to it either. that is if you were wantign to replace it all.

It could be a sticking caliper or the E-brake may be adjusted to tight.

According to the mechanics the rear calipers were sticking so they are replacing the calipers and pads...

No charge to me,it has a 30 day warranty.I did how ever question the service manager as to the extent of their 120 point inspection.

Had the same problem. Wheel would heat up like crazy after driving on the highway. Once had to hose it off with water just to cool it down. Turned out that one of the rear caliper piston's seized and wouldn't retract. It would extend normally, but wouldn't go back. Replaced the caliper (I think it was ~$40 after the core deposit), bled the brakes, and changed the pads and haven't had a problem since. Let us know how everything works out.

PS congrats on the purchase! :SOMBRERO:
