Most install them in the engine bay. There are 2 really good spots to install one in. One being behind the air intake box and one slightly more confined area right in front of the brake booster and abs pump. You can also install it where the spare tire is located at but that compressor will take a beating in the winter with all of the salt spray kick up.

I've seen some mounted in the back windows behind the rear seats as well as under the hood(more common). You can always do something under the rear near the spare too.

My compressor is mounted in the back and is removable so I can take it out when I'm not using it. Personally, I paid way too much money to mount that sucker in the engine compartment. This is what I have:
http://www.viaircorp.com/ada-constant-universal.html

But that may be a bit overboard. It is designed to run at 100 PSI with a 100% duty cycle. I also mounted an 8 (or maybe 7) gallon tank back there as well so I can run light air tools. The tank simply gets strapped down in the cargo area, and can also be removed when I am not out in the rocks.

I have an ARB twin 100% duty compressor along with a Viair 2.5 gallon tank, both mounted where the spare used to live. I also ran a quick disconnect to my ATH tire carrier bumper, just behind the spindle, so it's semi protected and easily accessible with the carrier arm open or closed

The location works great here in AZ where salt is a non-issue. Not sure how well it would work out in other states though?
