Post subject:  2011 KK overheating

Ok here is the story, my fiance now drives my KK. It has 68k miles, she was complaining of a slight growling sound but after a couple drives I never heard it. Then it happened, the waterpump lost its bearing, tore the belt and she over heated, she luckily drove it for only a couple mins after that to an autozone. We let it cool down, grabbed a water pump new belt and tstat. After getting it towed to our house, and two days later I installed them both, refilled the coolant and started it up, the jeep then gets warm, but then continues to get hotter. It does finally throw a CEL which was P0117 the coolant temp sensor, ordered that came the next day and I changed it. Started the jeep up and gets warm, then goes hotter so without letting it get too hot I shut it down.

So I start searching, and the only things I am coming up with are bad radiator cap, and/or air in the system. I have checked the oil for water/coolant and it is clean pure oil as it should be showing no signs of head warping. The radiator fan is blowing and does change to a higher rpm under load such as the AC being on.

My question is could the cap and/or air bubbles in the system keep the jeep overheating? I am more of an old school motor head (i learned on a chevy 350 motor) so these newer cars are a bit different and apparently VERY picky.

Thanks for any input.

My bet is on air is the system. There is a bleeder screw on the hose that comes out of the top left of the engine that can be used to burp the air.

I am truly hoping that is it, I am going to try to bleed it out tonight and see if that corrects it, I might just buy a new radiator cap just because they are cheap.

MY waterpump went on my around 70k miles. Its a 2011 and still under warrantee for a few more months at least. its covered under the powertrain warrantee. Dealer fixed it no problem.

While it probably is still under power train warranty I am pretty sure it wouldn't have covered the 25 mile tow to the dealership. And that cost alone would be more than what I have spent fixing the jeep so far. But I will keep that in mind if anything else happens to break.

Well I got home, replaced the radiator cap, bled the system for 20 mins. Turned the heat off, turned on the AC to full blast let it sit running that way for 10 mins, then drove it for 10 mins from 35mph up to 55mph, then parked it and let it sit again for 10 mins with the AC still going full blast. All the while the temp stayed steady at just below halfway on the indicator, where it normally rests. Before the Coolant sensor went bad it got way hot in a matter of 10 mins flat, so I think at this point everything is as it should be.

And I found out the power train warranty since never being transferred from the first owner, is not transferable to me the third owner.

Glad to see you found the issue. I too just found out I no longer have my powertrain warranty. Apparently I got it inspected a month too late
