Rear spare tire carrier

Ok so I was thinking about doing this before I saw it on the Cherokee and then I saw this any thoughts I really want this

You could always talk to AtTheHelm. I know he redesigned his rear bumper so he can eventually add a tire carrier

It would be nice to move the spare to the rear for function and even for looks.
That being said it would cause a blind spot which I think you'd eventually be able to overlook. On serious trail runs you could have 2 spares. :twisted:

You'd have to make it a drop down carrier and it would slaughter your already bad departure angle if you worked around the plastic bumper.

Well I need a hitch anyway Morgan so I'm gonna bring it up alittle higher and sink it behind the bumper and cut notches in the bumper

Detoures is the same company that makes Ted15's Backbone winch mount. He has a Knucklebone tire carrier also.

What I'd really like to see is someone use a Knucklebone to mount their spare on the tailgate, and then convert the now empty space under the rear of their KK to house an auxiliary fuel tank. It would make the KK an expedition vehicle with some serious range. Just putting it out there! :goink:

Do it! But I think it wouldn't end up as big as the area appears. By the time it was made strong enough size might end up 1/2 of what's there.

If you could get someone to build a tank for there you'd have about 9 gallons I would say with including a pump, and the area you have to work with. But still another 180 mile range would be nice in some areas of open highways

2-5 gallon cans a lot cheaper and at least 1 gallon more.

AHA! You figured out one of my dream plans if I get to do some long distance traveling..sort of.

Promised myself that, if I make it to doing the TransAm trail, I would move the spare and add a water tank there. Use it for showering, cleaning, etc. and then have a different spot for drinking water inside.

I have a few thoughts about the OP's original question about the Knucklebone tire carrier. Maybe Ted15 will chime in, or somebody else who owns one:
1) Is it a pain to unpin and swing the heavy tire out of the way every time you need to get open the tailgate?
2) Can the rear flipper glass still open with the tire on back there?
3) And what to do with the license plate and license plate light, which would be hidden behind the tire?

1) takes very little time to swing out of the way IMO, I have dual swings on my RL bumper and only takes a few extra seconds for both of them
2) I'll let Ted answer but I don't think it did

3) You could be like Ted and just forget about it and run it that way, or easy to wire up a light and mount the plate on the spare. , have a disconnect so when you removed it you could unplug it and/ or could be wired right into your trailer plug since you wouldn't be using that anyways with the carrier mounted

The flipper glass just clears the tire plus the piece the tire mounts to is adjustable. It's not an issue swinging the spare out of the way. As far as the license plate goes, Tom's right, I usually forget to mount it lol but a couple zip ties hooks it pretty well. I also have a license plate mount but it was made for Crager soft eights, they have a larger hole than the OEM rims. I plan to put Rock Krawlers on when I get new tires, I think the holes are the same size as the soft eights. By the way, the tire isn't heavy while it's mounted on the carrier.
The one on the Cherokee, if it was made by Detours, is probably a tailbone. He does a very good job with those. Usually their welded to the rear crossmember. Some drop out of the way and some swing out of the way.
