Post subject:  Sky Slider replacement

I bought a used Sky Slider assembly out of a junk yard and it works when I manually turn the motors (from a 2008 w/ 80K miles). That's more than I can say about the one I have at 81K miles. Anyone ever replace the whole assembly? It looks like I'll need to drop the headliner to get access to the retaining nuts and wiring. I'm wondering about the urethane sealer, will it have to be cut or will it just pull loose? Thanks

I don't have any idea. BUT keep us posted with your findings and how it goes. I'm particularly interested since I have a sky slider too.

After looking at the used one, they didn't cut the urethane. My cousin is a body shop guy and he said they didn't apply urethane primer before applying the urethane so it doesn't stick super tight like in a windshield application. He said I should be able to unbolt it and once I get a part of it to break loose it should all come loose. Hoping he's right!
I'm trying to figure out how to post pics from my phone on here, I'm not winning...

You need to upload them to a picture hosting site, like photobucket, then copy the image code and paste it between this: [img]like.this[/img]

Imgur Android is the easiest way I found to upload images. Upload the photo and it spits back a link to use.

Here's a couple of pics of the used replacement I bought. The current one has about 1/4" gap between the gasket and the bottom of the canvas. The top seems to be locked in place but doesn't move. The motors run and you can hear something moving but that's it. I manually opened the replacement so I'm hoping it will run when I plug it in. I have Google pics, can't get it to post a pic. Sorry

I replaced the assembly this weekend. It was about a 4 hour job. I removed the rear upper trim, then the trim on A, B, & C pillars. On the B & C you have to remove the screw behind the half circle cover. On the B pillar you'll need to slide the seat belt down to see the screw. Then remove screws for the grab handles in the 2nd row. I didn't unplug the wiring. Then I removed the sun visor and also the hook on the other end. Basically the trim, handles, sun visors and sun visor hooks hold the headliner up. The wind lace that surrounds the sky slider opening is part of the sky slider assembly. A few gentle pulls and the headliner comes down enough to get at the 14 studs to remove the nuts and unplug the 5 connectors. The rubber seal on top is slid over the outer edge of the frame assembly and can be pulled off. I then took a sharp Snap-On gasket scraper, sprayed the urethane with a water/soap solution and cut through the urethane without scratching any exposed areas. Then the assembly was lifted out, remaining rethane was removed, scratched paint was touched up with a brush (under the seal so it won't be seen), new 5/16" bead of urethane, repacement top was set in place and bolted down. Wiring was attached, opening was attempted, motors didn't even make a click. Took the relay out of my old assembly and put it in the replacement and everything works! Then all the trim was reinstalled. Great buy for $200! I took pics and have them on Photobucket.

I select Img, copy & paste the link from Photobucket, and all I see is a long link and no picture.

I think you're the first person I've read about who has replaced a broken sky slider on their own. Nice job!!! You saved yourself about $3,000.

Make sure the link from photobucket is the raw link with just the file name. Like:
http://location.filename.jpg

Copy that raw link and paste it between IMG tags here, like:
[img]http//location.filename.jpg[/img]

I kind of lucked out, I just happened to look at Jeep Liberty on Craig's List and saw one listed as being parted out. When I looked at the pictures closer I saw it had the SS roof and the yard had a 30 day guarantee. I'll try the pics again. One other thought I had was to use the old one as a template and make a fiberglass plug....

I give up, it gives me 4 options: email & IM, Direct, HTML, or IMG. This is IMG option

Fixed it. Direct was the option you needed. I deleted the rest of the code except for one set of IMG tags.

Does anyone want more pictures? I took more but they're basically showing the trim removal, the wiring plug-ins, and then cutting the top out.

Sure! It would be great to see what all is involved. Sky sliders are aging and I'm sure your DIY replacement how-to will be in greater demand as time passes. I've added this link to the KK How-To Index in the tech section, so people can easily find it. Thanks for writing this up!

Yes more pics would be awesome! God forbid I'd ever need to replace mine, this would help a ton.
