 Post subject: Electronic Door Lock Issue

So I just bought a 2008 Liberty North Edition in a private sale. After the money was paid and we drove away, I realized the passenger side (front and rear) door locks don't lock or unlock with fob or door switches. When I start driving the auto lock safety feature locks all 4 doors normally. When I use the fob or the manual door switches, you can see the lock knobs move slightly and you can hear a click from both front and back doors, but they won't fully lock or unlock. Tried disconnecting the battery to reset the computer but that didn't help. I thought it might be a worn out/ faulty module or relay but if that were the case, the auto lock safety feature wouldn't work. Any ideas?

My guess is you are on the cusp of needing a new battery. The door locks take a lot of simultaneous juice. When you're driving, the alternator kicks in what you need and they lock normally. But when the Jeep is off they only go about halfway because your battery isn't supplying sufficient current. Not sure how you are able to start the engine if I'm right, though! :lol:

Sounds like you have some work ahead of you...
Your symptoms are classic for a bad actuator. The lock actuator is part of the door latch.
Only way I know to fix it is to replace the latch.
But... One Q, when you manually pull up on the lock pin, is the resistance the same on the bad locks, as on the good ones?

This could be the case, but we will need to know if they do not unlock while the rig is running. Easy to test.
Wire corrosion could also possibly cause the symptoms. Harder to test. Pull out and actuator and run direct 12V to the pins.

I don't think it's the battery. Starts no problem, and the battery doesn't really look that old. I ran the truck and tried the door locks. Still didn't make any difference.

Ok, so when I pull the passenger side lock manually, the resistance is a little weird. Sometimes it feels normal like the driver side, but if I have locked and unlocked the doors a few times, it does feel different. I can easily pull it up part of the way, but then I have to give it a bit more to fully unlock the door. Same kind of thing to lock it. Feels like I may be pushing a gear or motor or something that doesn't really want to go. Also, after spending some time today messing around with things, the passenger door lock doesn't auto lock anymore once I start driving. It also seems to move less frequently when I push the lock and unlock buttons. Also, after locking and unlocking the doors a few times, the driver side doesn't want to unlock electronically anymore. I let it sit for a minute and then it works again fine.

FYI, Don't electronically lock/unlock the doors repeatedly! One of the problems with the TIPM(computerized fuse box) is the internal relays are just barely AMP rated high enough to operate the locks. Repeatedly unlocking/locking puts a lot of heat strain on the relay and solder joints on the PCB(Computer board). If the relay shorts out you are looking a getting a new TIPM.
Most likely the reason the drivers side stopped working for a bit is because the TIPM killed power to the circuit. It will do that if it thinks a button is stuck.

At this point you will need to remove the door latch to run further tests, or to replace them.

When removing the inside door panel, once the screws and 1 bolt behind the handle trim are loose, DO NOT pull the bottom of the panel toward you. You will break it. The panel has upside down "L" brackets which hold it on. So lift/slide the panel up toward the sky, to release the "L" brackets.
