Hi Guys, New to the forum. I recently picked up a 2011 Jeep Liberty Sport 4x4. My question is regarding the transmission (42RLE) cooling lines. Does anyone know which line is the outlet and which is the return? I would like to install an aux cooler and just want to make sure I have the lines right! Thanks! |

That's a good question. My guess would be the one lower on the side of the trany would be return. But that would be a total guess. The SM does not show flow direction of the external trany cooler lines, and does not label them in the removal or installation instructions. |

One main issue with an Aux cooler would be the OEM bypass valve. It cross connects the out line to the return line. It remains closed(loops the flow back to the trany) until the trany fluid is up to operating temperature. Once the trany fluid is up to temp, it opens up(closes the loop back) to allow flow to-from the OEM cooler. If you splice in the Aux cooler on the trany side of the bypass, it will take a long time to get up to operating temp., which will cause problems. It would be best to splice in from the cooler lines at the Rad. |

The lines turn to rubber then back to steel before going into the factory cooler. I was thinking of splicing into the rubber line. - Dave |

I don't have an automatic so I can't look for you on my rig. The 2 steel lines come out of the drivers side of the cooler and then turn into rubber. Then back to steel. It is in this area it clamps across the two steel tubes vertically. I believe it is on the right side of the engine? #4 in this diagram.

I should be good if I tap into the rubber line, so I will be on the cooler side of the bypass valve. All lines on my Liberty are on the drivers side. Thanks again for the help! - Dave |

Glad to lend a hand when I can.  Sounds like you have a good plan for the install. And thanks for telling me the tubing path. Since I don't have an automatic, I wasn't sure which side of the engine it was routed. Now I know if the question comes up again.  Your next hurtle will be to figure out how much fluid you will need to add. Rigs these days are not easy to DIY like they used to be. You will need to monitor the actual fluid temp, via a scan tool, then using that temp, match the fluid level to the chart. Once you get that covered, your golden.

I have already been preparing for the fluid fill. I have a "dipstick", a chart and the scantool for the temps. Thanks! - Dave |

OK, so I learned a bit more about which line is hot (output). This thread cleared it up: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/keep- ... ndex7.html I can verify this from my own experience on the 2011 Liberty with the 42RLE trans. The lower line is the hot (output) and the upper is the cool (return from cooler). Auxiliary cooler and external filter installed and working well. Pics to follow....Cheers! |
