Post subject:  Tire pressure when airing down?

So I've done some searching and found a few answers but not for the actual tires I'm running. I purchased hankook dynapro atm's in 245 75 16's LT b load. For the trails I drive and the fact this is also my everyday driver, I figured they would suit my needs. I do wheel some intermediate trails but not too much sharp rocky stuff. I wasn't too worried about sidewall strength since the crappy passenger tires made it without airing down. Anyways, getting to the point, what is a good pressure to run these tires offroad. I'm thinkin I should be safe around 18 psi? Maybe a little lower?

From all the views and no replies I take it this was a dumb question...lol. I'm guessing I kind of answered it myself. I searched, but all the answers I could find were for airing down mud terrains like mtr's. I'm not trying to air my all terrains on the stock rims, with 2 ply sidewalls down to 10 psi and lose the bead or have the rim tear the tire up because there's too little pressure... how low can you safely air down all terrains? I'm going to just start at 18 psi and go from there. Maybe adjust down a little lower if I feel comfortable. I'm fairly new to offroading so any tips are greatly appreciated.

i used to run my 245-75-16 MT's in E load at 10-14 you should be plenty fine at 18
like you said you never had any problems with your old AP's or whatever you had right?
i try not to air down farther than i need to my 12v air pump is a pos. lol

Thanks man, that's what I was thinking, thanks for the input. I will start at 18psi and see how it goes.

The forum isn't as active as normal lately. It tends to slow down this time of year.

Anyways, start at about 20psi. Honestly I find my load range C 245/75-16 Duratracs wrap pretty nicely at that point. I normally shoot for anywhere from 12-20psi depending on how soft everything is and if I want a softer ride.

It's hard to give an ideal pressure. Every driver, Jeep and tore is different. What works well for driver A might not work for driver B just because A's Jeep is heavier or the tire is a different load rating. As long as you don't go below 12-15psi I wouldn't really worry about losing a bead (not to say it can't happen, but it's technically possible at 20 psi too...)

My MT/R's don't even start to deform till under 10psi,granted I drive on the streets at 27psi(35psi max for those 35x12.50x15's).

For your LT's if there mounted on a 7" rim you can go down to 14-15psi with no worry,on a 8" rim I would not go below 35psi.

Shoot, I run no more than 10psi on the trails over the rocks. I usually run 8psi when I'm crawling.

test the pressure out yourself. best pressure to start out is anywhere below 25psi. it also depends on wheeling terrain. i trail in sand here and there and have never needed to air down in my crap tires but usually air down in mud and rocks to about 22-25 psi and my tires lay near flat. so really just test out the pressures on the trail.

Thanks for all the tips guys, I'm gonna start off at about 18 pounds then and see how it goes. Sounds like I don't need to be too worried about going lower either. I just bought some cheap tire deflators off amazon. Anyone heard of x-bull deflators? They were 10.99 so I figured why not... next is a decent compressor.

I have two Jeeps, a 95 YJ with 33" tall tires and an 04 Liberty Sport with maybe 31" tall tires.

On the YJ I lower my tire pressure just below 10 psi for the trails in the woods. On snow I'll even drop to below 5 psi.
However on the Liberty I don't air down, I need every inch of ground clearance that I can get.

I suggest you experiment with tire pressures until you begin to lose ground clearance.

Tires with multiple ply sidewalls is important since that's usually where you get punctures.
