I'm getting ready to purchase new brake pads and rotors. I'm looking at those cross drilled and slotted rotors and want to know if they are any better than a plain rotor. I do occasional towing and off roading. Most of the driving we do is just around town, stop and go traffic. Any input on what I should look for? The drilled and slotted rotors look cool, but do they really offer any additional benefits?

Crossed drilled rotors and / or slotted rotors (rotors that are both slotted and drilled) are designed to allow gases to escape that build up between the brake pad and brake rotor. This allows your brakes to run cooler and stop better and the pads last longer! One caveat to the cross drilled rotors: drilled rotors can crack between the drilled holes due to rotor metal being of low quality along with extreme brake temps causing excessive heat in the rotor material... Slotted only brake rotors are a great alternative to drilled rotors because they serve the same purpose of expelling the hot brake gases, but since they retain the strength of the rotor (no holes), they normally will not crack like a drilled rotor can...

I run the PowerStop drilled and slotted rotor with EBC Yellow Stuff. I have very good stopping power even with all of my added weight. I was able to stop withing 3-4 car lengths going 60mph towing a 5000lbs trailer behind me. So I was pretty satisfied with that.
