I have 2 codes, p0579, and p0585 ,seems to point to a open circuit between the clock spring and the speed control switch. Anyone else have this? What was the problem?

Bad switch, loose wire/connection.
P0585 = Cruise control system, multi-function switch input A/B - correlation. Possible causes; Mechanical fault.
P0579 = Cruise control system, multi-function switch input A - circuit range/performance. Possible causes: Wiring, poor connection, multi-function switch, mechanical fault.

Thanks, I think I will have a switch on hand when I pull the steering wheel and just plan on replacing it.

Cool deal. Keep us posted on how it goes. And don't forget to disconnect the Neg(-) battery cable first and wait 10 minutes. No need for an airbag to pop off on you...

Well I have been sick with a bad cold and have not felt like doing much until today.i took a little utime and replaced the cruise control switch. It is a very simple job and only took a few minutes to complete.unhooked the battery, used a gold welding lens for a mirror,to see the releases for the air bag, removed it and just 3 screws and a wiring plug to change the switch. The cruise control now works again. A very cheap and easy fix.

Thanks for getting back to us with the fix. You'd be amazed how many folks don't.
Glad to hear things are in good shape again (you and the KK). Now back to enjoying your ride.

I have a new wiring issue along this line.
I have no codes, but I also have no functional cruise control.
When hooked up to the scanner, where it showed condition of the steering wheel switches, none of them registered a change on the scanner when each function was pressed.
The switches on the wheel were very worn, so I got new ones and installed them, with no change. Still not registering.
I checked for continuity of each switch position. All register continuity when pressed, but the resistance is different for each one. This seems to be correct according to FSM.
I pulled the clockspring and checked for continuity. All 10 are good.
Not sure where to go from here.
The FSM only shows the pinouts for the 3.7L, but it's vacuum controlled cable operated, and different than the CRD.
Pushing the cruise control on/off button still does nothing. No dash indicator, no speed control function, nothing.
Anyone else here have an issue like this in the past?

If you have a faulty brake light switch the cruise will not turn on.
There are 2 separate circuits for the brake lights. 1 for the rear and the other for the 3rd brake light.
Any dash "error light" will also not allow it to work.

Try a reset, disconnect the Neg(-) battery cable for 10 minutes.

Ok, disconnected tonight.
Will reconnect in the morning.
No dash lights on. With the power-up system check when the key is first on, this is one of the dash lights that do not come on. I can see where it is, but the cruise on/off button just does exactly nothing.

You may need to get a dealer diag to get a code.
If there is lost communication with the module/switches, that should set a code, but will not necessarily turn on the CEL.

I'm a bit troubled about that. All I know for sure is if I don't get cruise working soon, I'm likely to get a speeding ticket. This crazy thing is so smooth and quiet it can sneak up 20mph and I don't realize till I look down.

Trying to see if I learned anything new today...

[edit] woohoo, that's one thing anyway before I head to bed! Probably dislodged at least two other things to learn how to post links though.

There seems to be no change from yesterday.
Just to be sure.. With the KJ, does the dash cruise light come on when the On/Off button is pressed, or when the Set button is pressed, locking in a speed?

I started over, tracing from the switches. There are 3 wires to each switch, all 3 the same colors as the other switch. There is for each, a T intersection, and a single wire of each same color (3) going into the clockspring. Where those 3 come out of the clockspring, they continue with the same color. For each color, from the column past the clockspring checking back to each switch, there is continuity with no resistance.

From what I've read in the FSM, I'm assuming one of these should be a 5V supply. For each button on each side, there is a separate resistor, so that whatever button is pressed, a different voltage is returned, indicating what function is desired. I will check this theory tomorrow if I can, and see where it leads me.

The "cruise" light should light up when the on/off button is pressed once.
Repeated presses or a constant press may disable it.
The light will come "on" when the button is pressed, and the rig is running.
It will not "set" if you are going slower then 30 Mph.

I also found this in the FSM.
"The individual switches cannot be repaired. If one switch fails, the entire switch module must be replaced."

I did try to fix the original ones.
That didn't work so I installed 2 new ones
1AZ51DX9AB
1AZ50DX9AB

No combination of presses, long or short, has been able to turn the system on so far.

Trying to 'set' a speed (45+) with the assumed possibility that the system might be ON without the indicator lit, hasn't worked either.

I'm beginning to suspect you might be correct, about requiring a dealer's scan tool to re-activate the cruise.

It just seems odd that the scan tool that shows the activation of each switch, doesn't even flutter when any button is pressed.

Are the new switches the same color as the old ones?
The reason I ask is there are several options/part #'s.
The #'s you posted are for the Highline series Jeep.
I do not know if the internals of the switches are the same from the Premium (P) to the Highline (H) to the Medium (M) series.
In the medium series there are different option/color codes.
Each with a different part #.
Part ##### (Series code) [color], Side
1AZ501DHAB (M) [D5], Right and (M) [DB], Right
1AZ501J8AB (M) [J3], Right and (M) [J1], Right
1AZ50DX9AB (H) Right
56010686AA (P) Right
1AZ511DHAB (M) [D5], Left and (M) [DB], Left
1AZ511J8AB (M) [J1], Left and (M) [J3], Left
1AZ51DX9AB (H) Left
56010687AA (P) Left

As far as I can tell they are identical except for the wear and tear of the ones I removed. (all black)
I don't know any other way to tell if they are the ones that are supposed to be there.
The ones I removed didn't work either, so there is a chance they may not be the correct ones.
I do know that somewhere in previous ownership was in some sort of a front end crash, heavy to the left side. If it was hard enough to deploy the airbag, they may have swapped the steering wheel out with one that doesn't match, but that's a lot of supposition. I haven't had time to work on it lately, so don't know anything more.
It acts like a connector is unplugged, but I haven't traced them back yet. If they are the wrong switches, I suppose they could act the same way, but I just ordered the part numbers that were cast into the inside of the plastic switch bodies.

I don't know what highline means. It's a Sport, but it has a lot of features, such as overhead EVIC, premium sound, and reinforced steel skids front to back. No electric seats, no adjustable headrests and they're cloth, standard for sport models. I've seen other ones with metallic silver cruise switch bodies, but have no idea if this one came that way.

Makes me wonder if the rig came with cruise... Give your local dealer a call and ask them to look up your build sheet. Or check it on Jeep .com. You will need your VIN#.
If it did not come with it, all you may need to do is have a dealer turn it on.
But try this first.
Neg(-) battery disconnect 30 minutes minimum.
Reconnect battery, insert key, turn to "on" but do not start, time 12 seconds in the "on' position.
Turn key off. Then start the rig. In that 12 seconds the TIPM learns what modules are installed, checks VIN matches in other computers and checks programming.
If it has the programming, in theory, cruise should work.

I couldn't believe this. More wiring shenanigans!
Continued tracing the pin-out against the FSM, from the switches to the ECM

The cruise on the diesel all goes through the ECM C1 connector instead of the PCM like the gas models (thanks Scar0)

Circuit 1 (VT) was supposed to be wired to pin 30. It was actually wired to C1 pin 54.

Circuit 2 (VT/OR) was supposed to be wired to pin 54. It was actually wired to C1 pin 30

I was able to put the wires in the correct places. (Thanks to GDE and Steve777 for that knowledge)
Circuit 3 (DB/DG) was supposed to be wired to pin 65. I have no idea where it goes yet. I do know it does not go to any pin of the the ECM connector 1 as it's supposed to. Haven't had time to chase it down yet. It's the ground circuit, but supposed to be a PWM ground. Will be fun to trace. Not much room in there.

After getting circuit 1 and 2 wired correctly, I went for a drive to see if Cruise now works. It does not. No change.

The hunt continues.

I went to Jeep.com to get this Jeep's build sheet. It includes "Speed Control". I hope i'm correct in assuming that's their name for Cruise Control.

Glad to lend a hand where I can.

Yes, "Speed Control" (NHM is the sales code for it), is cruise.
Getting closer...

I put another 350 miles on it today and it finally popped a code.
U0121 - Undocumented Code.
I wonder if I can get INS to send it back to Italy.
