4.7L Throttle Body question

Hi Guys,

I am jumping into the throttle body swap on my 2011 KK and need some feedback.

I am looking at a 4.7L throttle body for sale ($65.00) from a wrecked (front end crash), 2009 Dodge 1500 pickup with 93K miles. Part looks fine in the pics.
What do you guys think? Too many miles?

Should be fine, just make sure it's drive by wire (electronic) and not drive by cable

Thanks, I did check out that thread! Some great info there.

Is it pretty much accepted that the stock Liberty air box works fine with the larger throttle body?

Any gains from a K&N CAI? Seems pricey....

NO gains at all from using one of the hot hair, whoops CAIs,esp K&N .
If you look at the overall design of the stock box it does very well.
Install a good paper filter like WIX for example and gets all the air the engine can handle

Should I upgrade the factory air tube with 3" tube, to run from the factory air box to the larger throttle body?

I like it a lot, I paired it with a 3" air intake and despite what Tom says I believe there is a small difference but it's likely negligible.

I still own both and have swapped them back and forth a few times. I've found no real mpg decrease and have slightly better throttle response but your mileage may vary.

Long story short. Is it going to make immense gains? No. However, if you can find one cheap like I did its a cool little mod. I wouldn't do it just to attach it to your stock box however.

I have 4.7 TB running with stock air box and spectre reducer from autozone I feel maybe a tad better throttle response but no mileage gains whatsoever but a little bit helps I guess

Well, I put everything together and have been testing it out for a few weeks now. Throttle response definitely improved and currently a slight bump in mpg.
Coupled this with a cat-back Flowmaster exhaust and she is running and sounding great. I took a couple of pics of my DIY intake setup.

What is the ID of the chrome tube and the silicone (22 or 33 bend?)?
As you probability noticed in the other thread I was in the process of making a custom tube when I dropped my mold and broke it. I never have gone back to work on it any more.

As far as mileage goes, I have not calculated mine recently, but I can tell you a trip I make ones a week into the mountains (Mom's place), used to take 1/2 tank. Now I do it with just over a 1/4 tank. It took about 6 months before I really saw any mpg gains. I'm still lifted with the over sized tires and still have the rack. I also I do not baby the throttle.

The ID of the aluminum tube is approx. 2.84", with an OD of 3.00". I had to cut the elbow on each end of the bend in order to get the fit perfect. The wall thickness is .08".

The silicone elbow is 3.50" ID x 3.00" ID @ 45 degrees. The 3.50" actually measured small (3.25") and fit the factory air box very well.

I also used a .50" ID rubber grommet for the air temp sensor. I drilled a .75 diameter hole and the grommet fit nice.

Just got back from Mom's place.
Raw data: Raining hard, lots of standing water on road, wind about 5 Mph.
19.0 X 2 (Aprox) miles freeway (cruise set to 73Mph), 21.0 X 2 (Aprox) miles County road speed 50 Mph average, elevation from 75' up pass to 900' back down to 370' and return.
76.8 total Miles on ODO, 4.428 Gallons regular = 17.34 MPG.
Real data accounting for spedo being off due to over-sized tires and ODO not calibrated;
When my ODO reads 60 miles, I have actually traveled 63 miles. That breaks down to .05 miles. 76.8 x .05 = 3.84 making total miles actually traveled = 80.64 miles (Google says it is 81 miles), 4.428 Gallons regular = 18.21 MPG.
Negs for mileage; I drive like a mad man... Over-sized off road tires, rack, rack lights, lift and winch. Over due for a spark plug change.
Neutral for mileage; tire pressure set at 33 Psi.
Poss for mileage; Magnaflow muffler and home made CAI and RAM air.
So there you have it.
I am pleased to say the least.

Not too shabby at all! The best mpg I have calculated to date was 18.8. Last week was 18.2.

Your welcome. Nothing like having real #s to look at.
I knew my mileage was better then before, but I had never taken the time to actually calculate it. Before I got totally disgusted and stopped calculating it, I was getting about 14 city and 16 highway, average 15.54. :banghead:

That was when I decided to just enjoy the ride for what it was.
When I saw the other thread I figured, "What the hey, any improvement is better then what I am getting!".
The mileage gains are not huge, but in my case it was a big improvement.
Not sure why my gains seem to be more then other have seen. But I can say I have not changed my driving habits at all. I still race off every stop, and WOT when getting on the freeway.

Anyway, enjoy the mod for what it is. If you get better mileage that is a bonus.
IMO this was one of the better Mods for my rig.

One last thing to add/suggest. After about a month, disconnect the Neg(-) battery cable for 10 minutes (Computer reset), after reconnecting the battery, drive it like you stole it for about a week. This will relearn the trany shift points.
Not sure if it will help for MPG but the trany will feel more responsive. If you don't like how it drives... Disconnect the Neg(-) battery cable again (10 minutes) and then drive normal to get things back the way they were.

Question..... I was driving in heavy stop & go traffic last night for about an hour. Once I was clear of the traffic and got the Jeep up to speed again, I noticed the Electronic Throttle Control light blinking red and the Traction Control light was on. Performance was reduced and I pulled over and turned the ignition off and back on again. The lights did not come back and performance returned.

What do you think that was all about? The owners manual states that the Electronic Throttle Control light comes on when a fault is detected. Could it be that the throttle body is becoming faulty?

Hard to say for sure. Check all the wire connections you took off for the swap.

I had a lightning bolt Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) light on once when the + battery cable was loose at the TIPM. That was a MY bad, oops.

Just remember if you mess with the battery cables to disconnect the Neg(-) first, then the Pos(+). Connect Pos(+) first, then Neg(-). VERY important!

It could be totally unrelated to the TB swap. Since you also had a Traction Control System (TCS)/ ESC (Electronic Stability Control) light on, I'd have a look at the wheel speed sensor wires at each wheel.
