Yesterday I hit a very deep pothole at pretty high speed on the interstate. It didn't seem to change anything, like the alignment or anything to do with handling. But on my way to work today the Jeep developed a very bad creaking and squeaking noise from the passengers side front. It got so bad that by the time I got to work (1 hour commute) it was pretty much constantly groaning and squeaking and it was worryingly loud. I couldn't see any damage myself when I pulled over to check it. And the noise wasn't connected to steering or braking, so I'm thinking maybe bushing or ball joint.

Anyone have any thoughts on what might have broken? (4" JBA adjust a strut with JBA upper control arms) It's sitting at a shop now within walking distance of my work awaiting a professional diagnosis.

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

Hmmm. If it is, it isn't going bad like any wheel bearing I've had go in the past. On other vehicles, when wheel bearings gave out they sounded like a weed whacker or leaf blower. This is a random loud spring-like sound, squeaking and creaking like the suspension on an old Model A Ford, but very localized to that one corner. You might be right though, because these are the original bearings and I'm at 145K. And wheel bearings do get progressively worse once they start to go bad. That's what is happening here.

I had a tie rod end go bad and it creaked every time my passenger wheel moved the slightest bit up or down. If that's it, use Moog, not oem. The I'm have plastic pieces between the ball and socket, pure crap. Same with the ball joints.

Now that sounds likely. The creaking like you describe whenever the wheel articulates even a little, is what was happening. I didn't notice any play in the alignment or steering, but maybe it's not quite that bad yet. I occasionally see a vehicle on the side of the road with a front wheel peeled back and all sorts of body damage from that, and so that's my image of a catastrophic tie rod or ball joint failure. Glad it's not to that stage!

There's a lot to be said for grease fittings

The answer turned out to be that my right upper ball joint was shot. It was definitely not safe to drive home on. Kudos to JD's Precision Automotive in Glenside PA for working my Jeep into their busy schedule today so I could drive it home at 5.

I ended up getting a TRW ball joint with a lifetime warranty so that I won't have to replace it again anytime soon. I'm sure the one that failed had about 100K on it so not bad either! It was from JBA and most likely a Moog.

In case anybody needs it, the upper ball joint part number for JBA UCA's is: K6292.

Here's an interesting side note.

Now that I got that upper ball joint replaced, it has almost completely eliminated any ESP activation that I used to get on slow 90° turns over bumpy pavement. That's a nice surprise and a bonus!
