Went to Monro for a water pump replacement and when I brought the Jeep home, I noticed that the new coolant was green (as opposed to the red G0-5 coolant in the overflow reservoir). I called the shop to ask what type of coolant they used and they told me it was Safety-Kleen Universal. Went to the Safety-Kleen website http://www.safety-kleen.com/products-services/products/antifreeze-and-windshield-washer-fluid/antifreeze, which doesn't indicate that their antifreeze is G0-5, but it does say that it is phosphate-free and HOAT, both of which are attributes of G0-5. My question is are the Safety-Kleen Universal and G0-5 safe to mix, or will it turn my coolant into sludge? Does anyone have any experience mixing these two coolants? They seem to have the same attributes, but I wanted to see if anyone has experienced any problems before I decide to flush the system myself and put in G0-5. |

HOAT = Zerex's GO5 coolant. As long as it states the coolant is HOAT your good to go. |

The key is not whether they claim it is compatible, the key is if it is Chrysler MS 9769 Approved. SAFETY-KLEEN KHAMELEON antifreeze comes in 3 versions. Greenish/yellow, red and, orange. I was not able to find if any were MS 9769 compliant/approved. Or if there were any formula differences in the 3, other then color additives. Unfortunately the only 2 compliant references in the link you provided are ASTM D3306, and ASTM D6210. Each includes both Ethylene glycol based and Propylene glycol based antifreeze. "Mixing of coolants other than specified HOAT engine coolants, may result in engine damage and may decrease corrosion protection. If a non-HOAT coolant is introduced into the cooling system in an emergency, it should be replaced with the specified coolant as soon as possible." "This vehicle has not been designed for use with Propylene Glycol based coolants. Use of Propylene Glycol based coolants is not recommended." I did find this in the service manual. The green coolant MUST NOT BE MIXED with orange or magenta coolants. My conclusion; Don't really have one. Other then the color may lead another person to add the wrong type of fluid in the future. |
