Post subject:  what does all this tire terminology mean?

hi all,

can someone explain to be how to select a tire? i understand sizes and dimensions, but when it comes to LT vs non LT, Number of plys, Load ratings, etc. i get lost. i would like to purchase duratracs in a few months but want to maintain a comfortable ride and not have excessive wear from a super soft tire compound/ can i get duratracs in a different compound/load rating/LT vs not LT?

The "load range" on a tire will effect the feel of the tire.
My tires are "E" rated, which have a stiffer side wall then say a "C" rated tire. The Ply rating determines how stiff the side walls are. "E" is a 10 ply rated sidewall, "C" is a 6 ply rated sidewall.
The Ply rating also determines how much "Load" a tire can handle as well as how easily the tire will "roll under" in turns.
The higher the letter/# ( B [4Ply], C [6Ply], D [8Ply], E [10Ply], F [12Ply]) the stiffer the sidewall = the harsher the ride. But less likely to roll under, less prone to side punctures, and the more total load it can handle.
LT = light truck-metric These tend to be a little stiffer to handle more load.
Here is a great source of info.

Load range C Duratracs are plenty for the KK unless you play in lots of rocks (in which that case I don't advise duratracs). I run them and the ride is fine. Could be better, but that's what you get going with such an aggressive tire.

would a load range E last longer than a load range C under regular driving conditions? i guess would i get more miles out of an E vs a C?

Yes and no,depends on the tire.

I have 74,000 miles on my load range C Duratracs and they still have 5/16 of tread left (just went out and measured). I've never had any tire last this long on any vehicle I've ever owned. I am running a 5-tire rotation so I expect to get 20% more life out of this set of tires than if I had started with 4, but they are hands down the best tires I've run so far.

I'm just around 50k miles on my load range C duratracs as well. They would have worn nicely if my original alignment wasn't garbage killing the outsides of the tires. The only way to semi salvage them was to rotate them all the time. I kept up with it for a long while, then got lazy. So the insides are about half tread or so, maybe a little less. The outsides got cupped, they're a little bit past that. I'll be making the jump to 32s by summer's end, maybe the beginning of winter. Gotta see how the funds are going.
