I just bought a 2012 Liberty 4WD with 17 inch rims. It has the wrong size tires on it. Can I go with a 245/65R 17 without tire rub? It gives more tire choices. I can’t buy new rims right now as I paid cash for the vehicle and it’s hard to explain the added expense of tires and rims.

I looked up that size on tirerack.com and it came up with 56 options.

I think you could go with any 29” diameter tire and be ok, because that’s the diameter of the stock tires. You didn’t mention the width of your rims though. Stock rims are 7” wide, although some people have gone to 8” wide rims. You also didn’t mention whether your Jeep is lifted. This info would help us help you more effectively.

It’s not lifted right now and they are stock rims. Someone put 255/70R 17 on it. It seems to be ok on the road but I’m afraid to take it off road until I get tires that won’t do damage to the Liberty. I will put a lift on it at some point but it’s financially unfeasible right now.

255-70-17 tire is over 31 inches tall, should have at least a 2.5 inch lift to run that size properly
Need to drop back down to a properly sized tire
A regear would also help if you ever wanted to run that size in the future
245-65-17 is more in line as to waht to look for 29-29.5 inch tall tire

Thanks for the info. That’s the tire that was on it when I bought it. I haven’t heard or seen any rubbing but haven’t been off road yet. Will the 245 rub? I was thinking about the destination at. I had them on my truck and it did pretty well.
