Post subject:  Airbag light and chime

Today my airbag light and chime came on intermittently during my morning commute. It would happen every few minutes. The light would come on, chime the warning sound, and then go away after about 30 seconds. I tried to observe if there was any connection to anything, but it doesn’t appear to be triggered by right or left turns, hard braking, acceleration, adjusting my drivers seat, adjusting my own weight in the seat, or turning the steering wheel in any particular direction. It may happen more often at slow speeds, but that may just be because I have a mostly slow commute. Ideas?

In my reading about airbag lights turning on and off continually (not on constantly) in Jeeps, I came up with these possible alternatives:
- clockspring malfunction: the horn and cruise control could also be affected, but on my Jeep they aren’t. The clockspring was the issue in a 2007-08 JK recall. But in those cases turning the wheel could turn on the airbag light. That doesn’t seem to be the case with my Jeep.
- seat sensor malfunction or loose connection: moving the seat or repositioning my weight in the seat do not seem to afect the airbag light. Connectors do not appear to be loose.
- TIPM malfunction: this one has me worried since I have had some intermittent and annoying issues with the door locks in the last year. Sometimes I can press the button and they don’t unlock all the way, although it looks like they are trying.

Does anyone have any other explanations for what could be causing the problem? I am probably going to have the dealer check it out soon unless there is something else I can test for myself.

#3 is not likely. When the TIPM relay for the locks burn up, they just stop working.
The actuators could just be getting tired... Cold weather will make it worse. You can try shooting WD-40 down the lock pin to see if they are gummed up.

#1 also not likely for the KJ recall, but still a possibility to worn clock spring.

#2 Seat sensor is a possibility.

And I will add #4 The wires to the 2 stalks(lights & wipers) are connected to the same harness inside the steering wheel that goes to the airbag. I have seen a couple KA owners who had one of the stalks going bag which caused the airbag light to come on.
Sometimes there were other symptoms along with the airbag light. Like turn signal not working, wipers go on and off for no reason, headlights won't turn off. But not in all the cases.
A code would help a lot if you can get one. But not all places can retrieve airbag codes...

I have this same thing going on havent tried throwing parts at it yet. If you dont have a hypertech have a shop get you the code. mine called out squib 1 which is either the clockspring or the airbag.

Just to keep this thread going...

I called my Jeep dealer’s service department and they told me there was an open recall on my Liberty’s airbag. So I have an appointment with them on Feb 9.

Meanwhile, I am pretty sure the clockspring is the issue with the airbag light, as it often comes on when I turn the wheel left. When driving straight or turning to the right, the light goes out. The light/chime is more likely to come on when it’s cold out, maybe because the clockspring wires are not as pliable when cold.

Update: I researched the so-called recall and it doesn't exist. Called the dealer back and confirmed no recall for my VIN. Cancelled appointment. That would have been a colossal waste of time and/or money!

I am very sure the clock spring is the problem, so I ordered one today from Factory Mopar Parts. $198 shipped.

I'll let you know how the install goes. I found a well explained how-to video from a JK owner. The procedure is basically identical to what I have to do.

Me too. I know it is a bit of a $200 gamble, but the more I drive it the more it seems like the clockspring has to be the problem. The electrical fault occurs when turning the steering wheel, and goes away when turning the wheel. I’m 95% sure...

Wish I could say! I got sick this weekend and the weather has been cold and rainy. I decided not to try and attempt the fix until I get feeling better.

Is anyone interested in a write-up for this? The JK YouTube clip above is pretty good, but I haven’t seen anything specific for the KK yet. If there is interest, I’ll take pics and document the process.

Take care of yourself first. The rig can wait.

It worked! The airbag light is off and doesn’t come back on every time I turn a corner.

My Jeep was in the shop for an unrelated reason and so I had them install the clockspring for me. As part of that process they reset the steering angle sensor. So as a side effect of that, my Jeep no longer has unwanted ESP activation around corners in town. So this is a huge win. I’m going to put that in the ESP activation with lift thread.

That is great news on both accounts.
I have been saying for years that resetting/recalibrating the SAS takes care of the ESP issue when lifted.
The big problem, it seems, is finding a shop that knows how to do it correctly.
An additional benefit, is your brake pads will last a lot longer now also.

Hell yeah! I havent been annoyed with the bright red light enough to swap yet. Still chasing my bounce. But definitely glad to hear it worked out.
