I’m planing to relocate the spare tire (245/75/16) on the roof basket (Yakima Megawarrior), already bought the steel cross-members bars and the tire adapter.

I’m concern about the OEM rails holding up, I saw a couple of leaking threads from the roof. (I do not have a soon roof)

Thanks

My roof leaked at the seams under the roof rack feet before I ever carried much of anything up there. I took the roof rack side rails off and sealed the sheet metal seams with 3M 5200 Marine sealer a few years ago and the roof hasn't leaked there since. I've carried a spare tire, two chain saws, gas cans, and a 10 foot awning up there at different times, all on my Rola roof basket. If it leaks, you can fix it once, and then it should be fine afterwards.

Great thanks for the advise, long ago I bought the ATH rails which I still have. I’ll go ahead and install the crossmembers but if the roof leak I’ll consider installing ATH rails.
I’ll get the Marine adhesive 5200 in the meant time.

Thanks again

Guest what? We have two day of rain and I found water inside the rear (driver section). I keep a Camo cloth to cover the back and part of it was soaking wet so I’ll have to do this sooner than later. Found this images in the net

Hi, I had the same leak issue and after modifying the rack mount this is fixed and regularly carry the spare and other heavy gear on the roof.

Finaly get to it, removed OEM roof rails siliconed the area around the bolts and installed ATH roof rails with gasket so hopefully won’t leak anymore. Soon will install the Megawarrior basket and the spare plus the hi-lift jack.
