I've had my 2008 Liberty for a few months now and only recently realized there should be a digital compass displayed to the left of the temperature gauge. Since I've gotten the jeep there has been nothing displayed there, just blank.

After seeing others Libertys and looking up the equipment list for my VIN I know for sure there should be a compass displayed but after searching the manual and the internet I've only found information on calibrating the compass but nothing about my situation of nothing being displayed.

For what it's worth the battery has been disconnected a few times since I've gotten the jeep for various reasons but there has been no change on the dash.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

See Electronic Vehicle Information Center in the owners manual. Maybe that will help.

I've been through that section but it only describes calibrating the compass. My does not (and hasn't since I've gotten the jeep) display anything to the left of the temperature gauge.

Also that section described user controls (a scroll and select button) but my jeep has neither. I have no steering wheel mounted buttons and only the odometer button on the instrument panel.

Ok, first run the cluster self-check.
Press and hold the odometer/trip button, while holding it in, turn the key to the "on" position(Do not start), let go of the button.
This self test will light up all the various lights on the cluster and will move the gauges. Sit back and enjoy the show while the self test completes.
In the area of the cluster were the compass should be, you should see all "8"s. and possibly more numbers and symbols.
This just verifies the cluster lights in that area are working.

Do you have outside temp displayed in that area?
See page 199 "Trip Odometer Button". Does that do anything?
Have you tried the compass calibration and variance procedure? I believe it is on page 204-206 of the 2008 KK owners manual..

Ok I performed the self test and everything checked out. The lights in the display under the speedometer were all functioning. And yes the outside temp is displayed but to the left of it is just blank.

I looked at "Trip Odometer Button" in the manual and cycling through only gives my odometer, trip a, trip b and then back to odometer. No effect on the temp/compass display.

Tried the "Setting Compass Variance" procedure on pg 204 and after holding in the odometer button for ten seconds "hr5143" is displayed on the odometer screen in place of the mileage. Pressing the odometer button again only brings me back to the mileage. No effect on the temp/compass display while doing any of this. I have no idea what that code is for and a google search brought up nothing.

Looked at "Calibrating Compass" on pg 206 but again, I can't get the variance to display so there's nothing I can do with that procedure.

Thanks for helping me out. Obviously getting the compass working isn't life or death but if there's supposed to be one then I'd like to get it working.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I was out of town.
HR######### is actually the computer calculated HouRs the rig/engine has run. You will also see HR toward the end of the cluster dance.
If your cluster was replaced at some time, this # may not be accurate. My cluster was replaced and they forgot to set/reset the HR. So it appears it has a ton of hours running for the actual mileage on the rig.(Which they did remember to set = to the original...)
Anyway, The rig has to be running, 0Mph if a manual trany or Park if an auto, to set the variance.
I forgot that little tidbit when I was playing around with mine, thinking about your problem. Had me scratching my head for a bit.

Please tell me you don't have a magnetic antenna on the rear of your rig.
Specifically in the area of, the top of, the right rear quarter window.

Hey no problem! Like I said, the compass isn't very high on my list of concerns but since I've realized there should be a compass it's become pretty hard to get into my jeep and not notice the blank space next to my temp gauge.

I have now tried holding the odometer button with the engine running and in neutral, engine running/in neutral and clutch depressed, and finally engine running/1st gear with clutch depressed. No change anywhere.

Also went for a spin in slow tight circles as per the calibration procedure just to see what would happen. Also nothing.

And finally no magnetic antenna.

Shoot, my bad. :banghead:
Try with it with the rig not running, but key in "on" position.
hold button for minimum of ten seconds.

Haha no problem. Engine off with key in the ON position is how I had it the first time I tried when I went through the self check, etc.

Where exactly is the compass located? (I suppose it's a sensor mounted somewhere?). I'm starting to think that perhaps something has been disconnected somewhere or maybe the sensor has gone bad?

The self check is; hold button then turn the key to ON.
Try key ON, then hold the button. Just trying all possible combinations...

The compass module is near the top of, the right rear quarter window, behind the headliner.
Caution here! There is also a side airbag charge located in that area. Always disconnect the Neg(-) battery cable and isolate it before you work on your rig!

At the end of the self check (cluster dance) did you get any P0 codes displayed?

Just had a deeper look at the SM. It says if the module has become disconnected, or the signal is lost, you should see "--" in that area.
Nothing in that display area, indicates a malfunction with the module or "lockup" of the module. They suggest the vehicle needs to be demagnetized, if that does not work then replace the module.
However, use of the Jeep Diag tool is needed to first verify there is a problem.

Well sounds like something I'll need the dealership to figure out. In other words this is now indefinatly at the very bottom of my list of priorities :-)r

Like I said, not having a compass in the dash doesn't end the world. I guess the silver lining is that I have my temp gauge (probably the more useful of the two anyway).

Thanks a lot for the help Scar0

You're welcome. At least we tried what we could..
Did you get any P0### codes at the end of the cluster self check?
Odds are this will not set any easily found DTC, but won't hurt to check.

Nope no codes. Literally not a single change to anything no matter what I did. Never would have realized there was a compass there if I hadn't seen pictures of everyone else's dash lol.

OK. Didn't figure you would see any.
Sorry we didn't get it fixed TMG64.
But thanks for asking the initial question.
I now know a few more things about my rig as a result. Like where exactly the compass module is located, and to not use a magnetic antenna on the back of the rig in that area.
Before this thread it never would have crossed my mind.

I see you have a manual trany. Congrats, they are pretty rare since they were only offered in the 08 KK.

Hey no problem. I had a feeling when asking that the answer would either be super simple or super complicated, just the nature of electronics. I also learned some stuff, that cluster self check is a handy little diagnostic and now I know how to look up engine hours which is cool.

And yea the manual tranny is one of the reasons I got this jeep. Didn't realize it was that big a deal until I had my mechanic check it out before buying and he told me he didn't even realize the second gen libertys were ever offered as a manual.

I used a mirror that had the compass from ebay for 30 bucks.
