How much fluid should you get dropping the pan and changing the filter? I opened my 2008 kk today and got almost 5 quarts out of it. Most of what I read online mentioned 3 quarts. My plan was to empty the pan and change the filter and then replace whatever came out but now I am concerned my transmission was overfilled. Is this normal?

Normal 42RLE service drain refill is approximately 4 quarts.
The problem is this is not an exact figure.
The only way to be sure it is correct is, you have to have an accurate trany fluid temperature, and correct dipstick to get it where it needs to be.
Start with 4 quarts, bring trany fluid up to operating temp, check with dipstick, add to correct level according to temp and dipstick measurement chart.
To little or to much fluid can have similar effects. Both cause frothing of the fluid.
Froth = suspended air, and air is never a good thing in trany fluid.

Because most folks do not have the ability to accurately measure the temperature of the fluid, Jeep has put a cap on the fill tube instead of a dipstick.
If I remember correctly, others here have used 4-5 quarts to DIY the fluid.
But the reality is, you need the accurate fluid temperature, dipstick, and temp/dipstick chart to get it right.

Thanks for the info. I have an obd2 reader i setup tonight to read trans temp. Now I am going to order one of those Dorman dipsticks off eBay.

As aside note, the car has always shifted funny since I got it 15k miles ago. It does a hard downshift from 2nd to 3rd when it's cold. The carfax record shows no trans service records so I decided I would change out the fluid and filter to see if it helps. I also recently changed out the front shocks and had the battery disconnected for over a week. Ever since then shifting has been really bad. Seems like it is revving a lot higher but not moving. I especially notice getting on the highway. Is there something else I need to look at that could be causing this?

Battery disconnect puts the trany in learn mode, to learn your driving habits.
Once the fluid fill is done...
After you disconnect the battery, and reconnect, drive it like you stole it for a bit.
I think you will like the results.
