Normal 42RLE service drain refill is approximately 4 quarts. The problem is this is not an exact figure. The only way to be sure it is correct is, you have to have an accurate trany fluid temperature, and correct dipstick to get it where it needs to be. Start with 4 quarts, bring trany fluid up to operating temp, check with dipstick, add to correct level according to temp and dipstick measurement chart. To little or to much fluid can have similar effects. Both cause frothing of the fluid. Froth = suspended air, and air is never a good thing in trany fluid.
Because most folks do not have the ability to accurately measure the temperature of the fluid, Jeep has put a cap on the fill tube instead of a dipstick. If I remember correctly, others here have used 4-5 quarts to DIY the fluid. But the reality is, you need the accurate fluid temperature, dipstick, and temp/dipstick chart to get it right.
