Found the issue last night. The loom was melted and looked partially chewed through, probably from the driveshaft, and the wiring finally quit out. Made a new connection, wrapped in tape and new wire loom. Looks brand new. Glad I didn't go to a shop, would have charged me for a new fuel pump and wouldn't have ever told me about this free fix. Pump works fine, I'll probably just hold onto the new pump.

How long is a fuel pumps life normally?

Glad you found the problem!

I never run my fuel below 1/4 tank.
Here is a real life example of why;
My brother-in-law used to run his Jeep Grand Cherokee tank to empty before getting fuel. In 8 years he went thru 3 pumps. Then I bought the rig from him. (it also had "trany" problems [ 2 rebuilt tranys in 8 years, it would not shift into overdrive.]). I replaced the dead pump (replaced the trany cooler/Radiator) and my daughter has now had the rig for 8 years. She always fills at or before 1/4 tank. Both the trany that came with it, and the new pump are going strong.
The pump is cooled by the fuel.

So, was this wire accessible without dropping the tank? Drive shaft was mentioned and I don't recall seeing any wires near my DS.
