Post subject:  Heater core coolant flow question

I have a suspected heater core issue, if interested the thread is here viewtopic.php?f=88&t=88868.

Problem is my back up 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee started leaking brake fluid today through a rusted line so I may have to drive my Liberty. I was trying to figure out if coolant always flows through the core or just when you call for heat. Looking through my novice eyes it seems the flow is constant judging by the hoses. If that is the case, would it be wise to temporarily couple the inlet and outlet hoses with a barb fitting and hose clamps?

I love my Jeeps but when it rains it pours.

You are correct it is a constant flow system. Disconnect the 2 hoses at the firewall and connect together. You will still have air blowing with the fan on, just no heat. So your windshield will tend to fog up.

Thanks Scar0 for the info. Both of my Jeeps are down right now, but this is the one that is safe to drive if I need to. With any luck I won't need to use it this week at all. Still not thrilled about my replacement core only lasting a year and a half, but, it's not the end of the world either. I also have a bad wheel sensor, so I'm pretty stoked it's not winter. No 4 WD and no heat is no good.

You're welcome.
Just remember which hose came off which heater tube. If you reinstall them backward then any crud stuck in the core will back flow into the other parts of the cooling system.
Since you are going to be replacing your core, its not so much of a concern. But for others reading this thread it may help them to prevent problems down the road.

Ya, It would totally suck if this happened in winter.
