When I crawled under the Jeep last week to locate a bad oxygen sensor, I noticed some drips of oil hanging on the bottom of where the bell housing meets the transmission. 2” above the oil droplets the metal looked clean and oil free, so it didn’t appear to be dribbling down from up above. Assuming there is no leakage from a valve cover that I missed, I am looking at a rear main seal leak, correct?

This week I noticed burning oil smells as drips of oil cooked on the exhaust pipe, but only at stoplights where I’m stopped for more than a few seconds. Probably the droplets fly backwards when driving but I only smell the burning oil when I stop. I haven’t noticed any oil on the pavement below my Jeep yet when parked, but the skid plate is probably catching it at this point because it isn’t a large leak.

For those of you who have had to get a rear main seal fixed, how much did it cost you? I can’t do this job myself since I think I would need to drop the transmission to access it. I only have street parking at my house. Thanks for any input from your own experiences.

Just saw this:

Apparently the rear main seals in the 3.7 aren’t known for leaking, but the fronts are. A leak from the front crankshaft seal can run along the oil pan seam and drip in the back at the lowest point. Another usual suspect could be the oil pressure sender unit. Seems like I have more detective work to do.
