Hello All, I frequent here but never post. I have a 2011 Liberty 70th anniversary edition. I bought it new and currently have almost 230k on it. I just bought a travel trailer and it weighs 3400 lbs. While towing it 90 miles home the floorboards became extremely hot and the seat mounts were scalding hot to the touch. When we arrived home it smelled like burnt transmission fluid. I have driven it twice since towing the camper and both times the floorboards have become hot. I changed the trans fluid last year. I am not sure if I burnt the trans fluid, or did anything to damage the trans. Any help or info would be much appreciated. Thank you, Don |

That doesn’t sound good. If it were mine, I think I’d do a trans flush again and check how burnt the fluid might be. Also, maybe do the transfer case fluid while you’re at it. That also uses ATF. For a trailer that heavy, your Jeep should either have the auxiliary HD fan attached to the water pump or it should have an auxiliary transmission cooler installed or both. The HD fan comes with the factory tow package but it’s easy to install yourself too. Here are some threads that might be useful. With that type of mileage it is not out of the realm of possibilities that your catalytic converter is clogged. When they are clogged, and you put them under an unusual load, like towing, where the engine management system richens the mixture those Cat's can get really hot, and super-heat to the point of even melting the carpeting on the floor. Now might be a nice time to have your mechanic check the age of your cat, and replace it with a modern high flow rate unit. |

Thank you for the replies. I flushed the trans and transfer case. It is still noticeably hot still on the seat mounts but not nearly as hot as it was before. I will take a look at the converter next as I have 235k on it. For now it’s towing with the 80 Cherokee. |
