Having fun today trying to remove the six M12 bolts that retain the Curt trailer hitch to the bottom of the rear frame channels. The bolts are rusted in solid tight and not budging with way over torque spec being applied. Thinking about next steps to remove them without twisting them off or ripping out the frame threads. Only the bolt heads are accessible and they engage into tapped threaded holes in the frame. Thinking about getting a 3/4 impact wrench and torch heat on the bolt heads to try to loosen them up. Anybody been through this with some success? Please share with me any secrets, and thanks in advance! |

Not trailer hitch bolts but was in a similar situation with an axle nut to change a wheel bearing. I actually broke a breaker bar by standing on it. A good impact wrench will break it free, along with a good prior dosing of PB Blaster or Aerokroil or similar penetrating oil (not WD40). |

The best best penetrating oil you can get is a 50/50 mix of atf & acetone. There was a study done years ago by the ASME that showed it to be the most effective. You are probably going to destroy the threads in the frame as there will be rust on the thread that needs to screw through it. The more time the penetrant is left the better. Days is good with regular re-application. If you can get penertrant on to the threads it will help. In other applications I have found an opening in a frame & used a tube to deliver it to the thread. Good luck!! |
