Yes, the engine can be sprayed but don't use the high pressure. It could force water where you don't want it to go.

Think of this.....if you can go through streams and small ponds, you surely can spray water on the engine, just not with high pressure.

Use different size brushes to soften up the dirt so you can spray it off easier. Then engine cleaner to get the dirt film off.

If the engine (dirt) is dry you can also use a shop vac to clean up around the electronic areas to avoid any issues with the water getting into the electronics. I know that the OEM's test for this stuff, but still... Then take a hose to your car and clean off the areas that you can't get to with the vauum.

Use a good degreaser and spray down the engine compartment thoroughly. MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS TO A COLD ENIGNE! So we're talking like 1st thing in the morning here. Take note of the obvious that you don't want to get thoroughly soaked (spark plugs, computer, wouldn't go to crazy around the alternator either). Spray on degreaser (Purple Power, Simple Green, or Greased Lightning all work great for me), let it work in for a minute or so, and then as posted above, hose off GENTLY. You're not putting out a fire (atleast I hope not).

I usually then leave the hood up and let it dry a little bit, then start her up and get it up to full running temp to evaporate the rest of the remaining water off. If you still got some on the belt when you start it, it will probably squeel a bit, or it might chirp untill the belt gets warmed up. Nothing to worry about though.

Remamber, never use anything containing silicone under the hood, Like Armor All Protectant, It will screw up the sensors in the intake and you will be getting error codes, if it is bad enough the computer can go into limp mode. Yes I did this in my younger days, It was a very spendy engine detailing.
