Post subject:  Restoring plastic bumper trim
I have a limited with painted bumpers and the normal black textured plastic trim. I accidentally put some cleaner-polish on the trim/step and now it looks like it's 15 years old. None of the other plastic trim on the body is significantly faded. I thought of using something like back-2-black or forever black, but I'm wondering if simply getting the residue off might restore most/all of the original appearance (enough to buy me a year or so of not having to apply protectants all the time).

I've heard peanut oil (peanut butter, etc) is effective since it's what's used in many plastic molds and is what the plastic is forumulated to NOT stick due (hence is a good "plastic solvent". I was also considering murphy's oil soap. It cuts most automotive oils/residues better than normal dish soap since I think it's also based on organic oils. Believe it or not I have easier access to the murphy's than to the PB :)

Any other suggestions (not dyes/protectants, just something to remove the crud that's making it look bad now)?

I use Marvel Mystery Oil on all of my black plastic. Very light application and then wipe off with dry cloth, it will look new again. :SOMBRERO:

that synthetic ice wax works pretty dang well on my friends wrangler flares, never tried the MMOil on them

So, as the goal right now is removing the residue (not worried about what I'm going to use to protect it, yet), I tried some "home remedies". Peanut butter (crunchy style for the grit :) took off a good deal of the white haze. I'm going to try murphy's oil soap (since I think it's also veggie-oil based).

I use it on all my plastic parts and even ICE the glass with good results.

I waxed my lightbar, the wax rinsing down the windshield got on my nerves when it rained due to the extra beading

but yeah.. i have no problems with the ICE products what so ever, plus, the ice interior cleaner/protector smells good

I use that cheap lotion hand cleaner that you get for autozone in the tub. It works wonders and costs $2

A temp fix till the next wash is WD-40. Spray a little on a cloth and wipe. Presto. Plus it makes it nice and shinny.

Yep, need to go pick up some creamy style. I normally only have chunky in the house and the peanuts are hard to work with on the plastic :P

Does the quick-detailer do anything in particular or just get off the peanut-butter? Would I do just as well to use a mild car-wash soap if I already have a bucket?

The QD is just to make it easier to wipe of the PB...

As far as soap, I've never had luck with removing it with just soap...

Maybe this is the wrong thing to do but....all the black trim on my Liberty was getting faded. So I tapped it all off and sprayed it with gloss black, then a few clearcoats on top of that. Looks amazing. I've had the thing through the powerwasher washing mud off from the trail and still comes out all glossy black :D

I have been using that Mothers Back-to-Black to stop and reverse the oxidation. I found it on the AMSOIL site so I tried it. Works great on my Jeep Liberty Limited. 8)

I have to agree with BugginKJ (and thank him too) that Marvel Mystery Oil really worked well on the faded trim of my 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo.... I hope it lasts... Wonder what's in that stuff?
