Brown stuff on the back of the rim...brake dust. Take the wheels off, use some Simple Green and a brush, and shiny again!

hey everyone, i got some questions and maybe ya'll can help. (1) anyone know a solution to the cracking/rusting on the tires? whats on your wheels is just curb rash from hitting curbs dont hit curbs ha. the other one they make stuff at hardware stores that remove rust |

haha it's on the inside of the wheel though...how is it that i can get road rash in those spots? i haven't hit curbs it was like that when i got it a year ago. just was getting annoyed of hearing the cracking when i was cleaning the tires, =] i will check out the hardware stores. thanks! |

Ah, I will have to disagree.... Granted I am only looking through a cellphone screen.. The wheels that is corrosion and peeling in the clear granted the brown stuff some simple green will take it off.. The corrosion is most likely from salt, acid rain..etc. etc. Maybe, I'll make a tech article on this in the future summer months, just way to cold right now!!! I might have gone way into deep for this for what you're looking for but eh someone else can read it to If someones ambitious now email me or PM me i can guide you step by step.. Takes a lot of patience and some good elbow greese!!! Theres a lot of ways to remove it, sometimes steel wool will be enough, wet sanding with like 600 or so... then follow up with some aluminum polish then clear over the section... Just want to use the least abrasive grit possible to remove the oxidation.. The harsh abrasives 80grit and lower might remove it quickly yes... but you will be following those with higher and higher grits to finally wet sanding.. Might not necessarily look perfect unless you do the whole wheel.. I have to refinish my wheels once every few years... Salt corrosion and being parked outside have a lot to do with it... After the refinish coating them with a wheel clear does the majority of the protection and then coating them with a good synthetic wax helps but brake dust and salt tend to eat right through it fairly quickly.. The bolt... Well if your obsessed with not having any.. and you want to multiple items then theres different ways as well.. One you can buy a small gun shell tumbler that uses vibrating media to remove oxidation... Problem most of the time it will come back faster than you left it.. unless you clear over etc... Another way look for a guy that does zinc coatings... search around your area... Should run about $50 per 5 gallon pail and they can do just about anything... from suspension bolts to nuts washers metal fittings etc... and they all come back shiny and zinc plated!!! NO MORE RUST !!!!! Thats as good as you can get.... Problem with that route you have to do it all at once... otherwise it runs about $50 just for a few pieces Third way buy new... There is this company called Metric Multistandard Corporation that sells anything metric in any size shape etc... They dont have it... They make it to your specs and they are CHEAP!$@$ and they ship! My hobby is classic car restorations... Mostly Midwest cars... So you think about the rust and corrosion that i see lol |

Thank you so much! Not really obsessed bout the bolts just thought it would be good if they were cleaned. I will try some of the simple green. Will PM if I try the other stuff. Won't be until summer though cause it is 25 degrees right now around my area. Thanks again! Appreciate it! =] |

Yes, that's it! Corrosion on the wheels! I have the same issue. Some of that comes from the removal of old wheel weights. It takes off that plastic coating then the corrosion starts. I have tried some of Duffner's suggestions. But I haven't tried the wet sanding. Thanks for the suggestion.
