This seemed as good a place as any for this post.

All of a sudden, my headliner is deteriorating in the very front on both sides. Basically the foam backing of the fabric is disintegrating. Dang. The Arizona climate is tough on polymers.

It appears that the right way to fix this is to replace the entire headliner. I could do that myself, but auto upholsterers have to eat, too. (And do a better job.)

As a stop-gap solution, I scraped away a lot of the deteriorated old foam. Then I bonded the cloth to the foam remnants with a Permatex contact adhesive. That adhesive is for bonding a new headliner to a fiberglass panel. I don't expect it to last very long, just several weeks until I can fix it properly.

I stopped by the upholsterer today for a rough estimate. As long as they don't touch the sunshade of the sunroof, it's a simple half-day job that should cost about $250. The fabric is stocked locally so there's no special order.

He said that failure at the front of the headliner has become common because to simplify fabrication and save fabric, manufacturers now cut the headliner flush with the panel rather than wrapping it over the top for extra strength. So the fronts of the headliners fail earlier than they used to.

The plan is to get it fixed next week.

I did get this fixed by an upholsterer last Friday. It only cost $225, so I was happy with that.

It's not completely smooth like the original. There are some small impressions left from the manipulations of installation. The installer suggested they would relax over time. We'll see.

No pictures as its hard to get excited about photographing a headliner.

So how is it holding so far? I also have some plans on replacing mine soon. And mine really considering to just have it reupholster which is way cheaper compared to getting the oem headliner.
