Post subject:  Commander 4x4? Not trail rated?

Alright, long story short, my wife is test driving a commander as we speak.

The badge calls it a 4x4 on the trunk lid, I see half-shafts in the front, but it doesn't have a transfer case, nor does it have a trail rated badge.

Is is really an "All Wheel drive"?

FWIW, it's a 2007 Sport, $16,000 with 27k miles on it... and with the 3.7 V6 (which is what I have in my libby)

Why is there no transfer case? I thought that is what made a jeep a truck and not a SUV?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Vehicle, but I am just a little confused to the trim package options as I never looked to buy one because they are only offered in automatic :)

Thanks for any help!
Mark

If it is a 4x4 it has a T-case. How do you know it doesn't have one, crawl under it and look?

4x4 and trail rated are two totally different things. Just like KK with the 17" wheel package isn't trail rated. Just because of the wheels.

No, I didn't crawl under it... there isn't a selection lever inside to shift from 2wd to 4hi to 4lo, so in my book that makes it a AWD versus 4x4... just like her saabaru which we just traded in on the commander :)

Either way, as long as it will pull its self thru a snow drift at the end of our driveway I will be happy :)

It looks soooo much better parked next to my KJ than her Saab 92x Aero 8)

The more time I spend around jeeps the more I like them :)

XK's have an electronic range selector like the KK's. It is to the right of the shifter.

Ours doesn't have that :? BUT I do see front axles... and it says 4x4 on the trunk-lid...

The little "cubby hole" is there, but no selector button.....

Thanks for all the comebacks on this topic :)

not a button but a T lever. Only about 1.5" big. If all else check the owners manual. May be different for your year.

We just picked ours up... need to order floor mats, a spare key, an owners manual, and tow hooks :)

It came with skids which I think is awesome, and I really like how there is a trough to catch the spilling oil from the filter when I do oil changes :)

I am excited for my wife... we needed a bigger car, and the commando is a great size, and the fact that it shares the same engine as my libby is bonus points in my book... not that I have had to work on it... but just in case :D

I would guess yours is just AWD. My wifes 06 KX limited has the t lever for 4 low. I enjoy the ride, took it to the lake to shovel off the rv through about 6" of snow and ice on the dirt road and it did fine until i tried to come back up out of the hollow. I had it in 4 low but it was shuddering sort of like abs braking while i was giving it gas. I stopped and let it idle and it just crawled along just fine. I think i need to look at the traction control button or something next time to be sure it was off, I didn't think of that until I got back to the house. My wife was in the hospital at that time so i was kinda inn a hurry. Edit: By the way- we still have the goodyear fortea tires on it which are over half worn out!

As for draining the oil, our 4.7 drains from the front of the vehicle assisited by a built in drain flume. Your 3.7 should have plenty of room under the hood.

Happy trails

I believe the Regular Quadra Trac does not have the low selector, only the QTII and Quadra Drive II have the T Handle

Quadra trac I and the 3.7 is a bad combo to me. It's a big heavy truck with no low range, an anemic engine, and limited ground clearance. I'd look for a 4.7 or hemi with quadra trac II or quadradrive. They all get basically the same terrible gas mileage.

We actually have that setup (quadratrac with the 3.7.... I only know this in light of this thread)

We have no intentions to take the commander off road, it was mainly purchased because it it a jeep.... and it can seat 7 (4 kids, two adults... no problem)
My liberty is becoming more and more dedicated for off road.

If anyone plans to get a commander with the same combination as ours... just make sure you have recovery points. While it is decent in shallow snow it gets stuck much quicker than my libby in the deep stuff.
