max would not have helped, we Hutch had a set and they just sank as well. running water and sand, bad combo. esp after the arseclowns had dug big holes.

It was funny because only 5 mins before I got bogged down because of not being in 4wd, I was giving Hutch poop about when he did it>>>>. serves me right..

Please explain????

I have never used the Part Time mode, only ever used Fulltime 4WD.
Does the "locking centre diff" in Part Time mode make a difference on sand?
Would love to hear more about it.

If you are in Fulltime you have an open centre diff - consequently if you have one wheel spinning all the drive will go to that wheel and the others won't do anything. In Part Time the centre diff is locked so that the front and rear drive shafts rotate at the same speed: if a front wheel is spinning the other front wheel will be stationary but drive will still be available at the rear wheels.

So would I be right to assume that you'd use that in very soft sand, and or mud???
Wouldn't you just go low range?

Yes it makes a difference when you are climbing or going thru realllllly soft stuff.

If you stay in Fulltime, the transfer case diff is not locked , that allows the front and rear to turn at different speeds, thus, if you have a bit of torque going, then hit hard sand with the front and soft sand with the rear, chances are the rear will letgo and digg down. thats what happened to me. Wasn't bad or anything, I did misjudge the hill a little and didn't think it would need it, I didn't have a lot of speed going, was only doing aroung 1800rpm, and was going up a bit of a soft sand climb, fronts got over the bump, but, the rear just came to the bump and then dugg down because the front stopped pulling forwards. If I had been in parttime, drive would have been locked and the rear would have stayed at the same revs as the front, thus, not digging down, and transfering power to the front to keep it pulling.

Rarely do I use partime, esp on sand, but, I do when hill climbing and or accessing / leaving the beach. Just to make sure.

Excellent cmohr......
That now finally makes sense to me, I new how it worked, just wasn't sure under what circumstances you would use it.
So in Low Range, is it the same deal, with the locked centre?
Anyway, I'll have to give it a go in a couple of weeks time.

Probably the best way to think about it is to consider that 'part time' is true 4wd (especially if you have diff lockers front and back) whilst 'full time' is the same as AWD such as you get in a Rav or Territory (or a Subaru). Gives you better vehicle control on wet bitumen and gravel roads but really not suitable in any situation where the grip of one wheel can suddenly be significantly less than the others.

Low range always locks the centre diff so has the same drive as part-time high range.

I NEVER use 'full time' off-road - and only the mealy-mouthed would claim that's only because my Jeep doesn't have it!

Well. you learn something new every day, well a couple of things really.
And managed to hijack this thread at the same time

Great discussion on the bogging and relative merits of part-time vs full-time. It would be interesting to know if any of the KJs on that trip had traction control (ie ESP model years), I think Pipeliner might have it. Not sure when it started being standard equipement (I think 2006).

What a great weekend, the camping, the swimming, the driving, the bogged Prado, the tracks, the bogged Prado, the walk to the lighthouse (the view was great but the walk well lets just say it could be a while before I do that again), but most of all the great company. Susan and I Loved it. Special Thank's to the JaG's for organising the camping permit's and thank's to everyone who attended to make a great Saturday and weekend. Hopefully next time I can find us a spot where there is actually some fish to catch (I swear it should have been a good spot). I will post some of our photo's later on.
looking foward to the next adventure.
Jas

Yes, I've got ESP, and a right pain it can be when driving on sand! Just need a little bit of slip in one wheel and it starts trying to correct by applying the brakes. Luckily you can turn some of the features off which improves things slightly. It automatically switches off when in Low range.
