Many thanks to cmohr for a Sat morning chat on transmission coolers and all things KJ - good to finally meet you mate. :D.

So I managed to get the cooler mounted in the bar today - but now facing the challenges of hard pipes rather than rubber. Model year differences

I'm thinking of the compression fitting and barb approach in the long term with hose claps for now. How have those fittings held up Glend? they look like plumbing fittings - or are they something else?

Very surprised when checking the pipes temps for the return - from cold ( not been driven for 3 hours) it took less thn 3 minutes of idle for the input line to be almost too hot to touch - No wonder it keeps over heating.

might get a free hour or so in the morning to finish off - I hope....

Steve the fittings have held up fine, no leaks at all and they took a bit of a beating on my recent Cave to Cave trip. The transmission return line temperature sensor adaptor is a standard brass BSP T with compression fitting adaptors screwed into the metal line side and a barb on the hose side (double clamped). The 90 degreee side of the T is a 1/8NPT adaptor for the sensor to screw into. I got the fittings at my local Enzed. Make sure you use good quality pipe tape on the sensor threads. Don't use pipe tape on the compression fittings. On the ends where you are attaching the hoses to the metal lines make sure you flair the ends of the metal lines so that they don't slip off (you can do this by inserting the end of a pair of needle nose pliers in the metal pipe and pushing and turning to create a flaired lip on the line, not to much just enough to make it hard to press the hose over the line).

If you do the tap into the lines at the usual place it might be a good idea to think about some protection for the hoses and joints (don't want a tree branch jumping up there and ripping it all out on a track somewhere in the middle of nowhere. I haven't done this yet and it is causing me some concern. I'm looking for a piece of thick aluminium plate to fit that area.

BTW, I was towing my camper back to Sydney last Sunday, a 37C+ day, up a long steep twisty climb from the Colo River valley in the Blue Mtns, A/C was on and the transmission temperature on the return line never got above 175F. Of course the hot line was probably close to 200F but the ECO tune turns on the electric fan (Low) at 201F (on the in built tranmission temp sensor) and it never came on so I'll be using that as my new peak gauge setpoint. The electric fan goes to High at 235F. GDE reckon that trans temps are considered safe if running below 250 F. Personally that is way to hot for my liking and I'd be pulling over if it got to 200F.

Well the trans cooler install is on hold today - another dead battery :banghead: This one lasted... past the warenty, of course

So off the battery world again - any suggestions?

I've had Red tops, deka intimadators (yellow top copy) all have been reasonable but nothings lasted more than 18 months

ctek chargers are very good - 48 hrs on charge and my dead battery is all good again - even according to the batteryworld guy. :D

Still no idea why it went dead though which is something of a worry. The alternator is apparently a little tired according to the local electrics guy but at $1230 for a new one from jeep it can stay that way for a while. Anyone know a part number or equivalent (mine has worn off) as I may ship one in from the US as a backup

Steve I had an alternator go in a Subaru that I used to drive, and heard a similiar price from the Subaru service mgr, then he told me to go across the road to the local auto electrician who sold me a rebuilt unit for $300. Shop around I'd say.

cooler in place in the front bar and wiring all sorted - really regret not having a chance to plumb it in before this weekend. :(

Overheated the trans - again! very thin fluid and smelling burnt

A very slow run to Boonah later (the closest town) a quick drain and refill and things seem better. Tomorrow is order some mopar fluid, saturday is plumb everything in - hopefully no major damage done.

Bugger, hope you get it sorted soon, you'll be amazed how much heat that thing pulls out.

After last weeks overheating trans I decided to change the oil and filters - So about 6 litres ATF + 4 and one filter and one long afternoon - the trans is serviced and the aux cooler is in. Plus a litre of Lucas transmission treatment for good measure.

I did a compare of the old oil that got drained last week (kept a bit) very different - very thin an brown compared to the Mopar new stuff.

Hopefully this will make a difference - Test run tomorrow :D

And big thanks to Nick @ albion for a great deal :D
